Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för molekylär medicin och kirurgi

The Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) carries out both preclinical and clinical research within numerous fields. Linked to the department are approximately 450 researchers, postgraduate students, teachers and technical & administrative staff and we currently have about 150 PhD students. The department is conducting undergraduate courses for medical students, physiotherapist students, biomedicine students and biomedical laboratory students.

Division
The postdoc position is in the Rare Diseases research group. We study genetic disorders on a molecular level in order to understand disease mechanisms and apply new knowledge to genetic diagnostics. We work in a modern laboratory at the Bioclinicum building situated within the grounds of the Karolinska University Hospital, Solna. Several group members also work in the Department of Clinical Genetics at the hospital, the largest clinical genetic department in Sweden with 90 employees working with genetic diagnosis and counseling. We also work closely with the Science for Life Laboratory in Solna, and thus have access to massively parallel DNA sequencing (MPS) with all available technologies. We are currently developing in vitro modeling assays in cells to evaluate genetic mutations detected in patients.  https://ki.se/en/mmk/rare-diseases

The position is initially for a 2 year period with the possibility for an additional 2 year-prolongation and would be most suitable for an experienced scientist seeking a postdoc position as an independent researcher.

Duties
We are looking for a highly motivated scientist with a strong background in molecular and developmental biology. The successful applicant will be involved in analyzing the function of new candidate genes and mutations that might be responsible for hereditary neurodevelopmental disorders in patients and families that are counseled in our clinic. Experience in cellular models with culturing and analyzing primary cells as well as induced pluripotent cells (iPSCs) and differentiation to different neuronal cell types from the neuroepithelial stem cell (NESC) stage is therefore desired. This project provides the opportunity to participate in a translational project that will have direct clinical impact.

Entry requirements
Qualified to be employed as a postdoctor is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence. A person is eligible for a postdoc position if he or she has obtained a PhD degree no more than seven years before the last date of employment as a postdoc.

A doctoral degree within the area of biomedical research or corresponding foreign degree is required.

We are seeking a new group member with a broad range of interests and expertise in the following key areas:

  1. Culturing of iPSCs and NESCs
  2. Differentiation of NESCs into various neuronal subtypes
  3. Analysis of neuronal cells including various cellular assays, e.g. migration, neurite outgrowth, survival, and proliferation. Experience in FACS analysis and immunofluorescence is desired.
  4. Image acquisition and analysis: Expertise in bright field and confocal microscopy, time-lapse imaging, image processing and analysis, including statistical analysis.
  5. Molecular Biology/Cell Biology: Knowledge in basic molecular techniques specifically molecular gene cloning, in vitro mRNA synthesis and gene expression assays including PCR, RT-PCR, and qRT-PCR.

Applicants should have prior experience/training in these model systems/areas. Proven ability to write scientific articles and a track record of publications in international refereed journals is required. The applicant will be evaluated based on education and previous experience, relevance for the project, publications and track records, motivation, problem solving skills, and cooperative ability. Personal suitability is also an important criterion.

Application process
An employment application must contain the following documents in English or Swedish:

  1. A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defence, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  2. A complete list of publications
  3. A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  4. Verifications for crediting of illness, military service, work for labour unions or student organisations, parental leave or similar circumstances

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system.
