Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för medicin, Solna, Avdelningen för reumatologi

The Department of Medicine, Solna, is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet. The department consists of several divisions that are separated into different research groups. The core activities of the department are research, doctoral education and undergraduate education for medical and biomedical students. The research has three main profiles: allergy, cardiovascular medicine and inflammatory diseases.

Division
The Department of Medicine is since March 2015 one of the partners of a new SGC and IMI project focused on the discovery and validation of novel targets in inflammatory diseases (ULTRA-DD, Unrestricted Leveraging of Targets for Research Advancement and Drug Discovery). The positions will be placed within the research group of Professor Vivianne Malmström´s group, Rheumatology unit, Department of Medicine, Karolinska Institutet, Solna.

Project
We seek a cellular immunologist to work in a translational setting to establish patient-cell derived autoreactive T cell lines in the context of chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease in the research group of Professor Vivianne Malmström. The candidate will study both currently identified autoantigens and also screen for new ones via a modified fluorospot protocol developed in the collaborating laboratory of Professor Hans Grönlund. The candidate will also be included in active intrerational collaborations led by the group at Karolinska. The candidate will also be included in active international collaborations led by the group at Karolinska. These collaborations include a newly started program on the development of tolerizing therapies for rheumatoid arthritis (RTCure), and this and other international collaborations will provide the candidate with a large and active network in autoimmunity and therapy development.

The post doc candidate is further expected to study T cell effector functions and means to modulate those as a first basis for development of tolerogenic therapies, the work will give opportunities for international exchange studies in collaborative international settings.  A possible outcome will be to e.g. build animal models where patient-derived autoreactive TCR and IgG’s are introduced to allow a true mirror of the human rheumatic disease setting.

Duties
Grow autoreative T cell lines from patients with chronic rheumatic disease. Test T cell lines for autoreactivity by screeing a peptide library in fluorospot assays. Screen small molecules´ability to affect the autoreactivity. Summarise data, interpret and report conlcusions to collaborators. Paticipate in scientific discussions, group activities and international congresses.

Entry requirements

  • PhD in biomedicine or biology, or comparable with focus on cellular immunology.
  • Experience in culturing human antigen-specific T cells is a plus
  • First author publication(s) in peer-reviewed journals is required
  • Good writing and verbal communication skills in English is required
