Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för mikrobiologi, tumör- och cellbiologi, Karlsson-Hedestam

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching in immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 430 active employees, including 100 PhD students, 50 postdoctoral researchers and 26 professors. Key words are multidisciplinary, translational, national and international collaborations.

Division
We are seeking a Computational Biologist at the post-doctoral level to work in the team of Professor Karlsson Hedestam at the Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. The group studies B cell-mediated immunity and immunogenetics. For more information about the research, see http://ki.se/research/karlsson-hedestam

Research area
Adaptive immune responses to vaccination and infection varies between individuals, as does the propensity to develop autoimmune disease. Adaptive immune responses depend on highly polymorphic receptors that recognize foreign or self-antigens. Recent data in the Karlsson Hedestam group demonstrate that the genomic regions that encode these receptors are highly diverse between individuals. In collaboration with bioinformaticians at the nearby SciLifeLab, the group has developed methodology to characterize this diversity using next generation sequencing (NGS) of immune repertoires and computational analysis, allowing rapid construction of personalized adaptive immune receptor gene databases, see www.IgDiscover.se. The group currently generates large amounts of NGS data and is now looking for a dedicated computational biologist to extend and deepen these analyses, as well as maintain the existing software.

Qualifications
Applicants should be proficient in English and have robust computational training with at least two years of programming and research experience and the equivalent of PhD degree (awarded or about to be awarded).

Skills and personal qualities
The successful candidate will have a solid background in bioinformatics, statistics and computational biology, expertise in statistical and bioinformatics software and an ability to work in a multidisciplinary research environment. The individual should be highly driven and be able to work independently, while also being able to communicate effectively with other members of the team. The candidate should have documented research experience over the past two years. A proven track-record of developing software tools that have been published in high-quality journals is valued. Demonstrable expertise implementing algorithms for sequence alignment, sequence clustering, and distance calculations will be preferred, as will experience with phylogenetic inference and/or next-generation sequence analysis. Extensive experience with Python, R or similar programming languages is required.

The responsibilities/duties include:
Experimental design, in particular for high-throughput sequencing experiments; Data QC, data management and archival storage; Analysis of large datasets, including development of new methods and tools for advanced analysis, support the ongoing research in the group, shape, develop and maintain the computing resources of the group.

Assessment criteria
A selection will be made among qualified applicants using the following bases of assessment:

- Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research

- Analytical skill, which may be assessed by a technical interview

- Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies in the subject

The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.

Application process
The application should contain the following documents in English:

  • A personal letter and summary of current work (about one page)
  • A curriculum vitae including a complete publication list
  • A copy of degree certificates and associated certificates

The application is to be submitted on the MyNetwork recruitment system.
