Karolinska Institutet, Institutionen för neurobiologi, vårdvetenskap och samhälle

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Division
The position of postdoc is announced by the Aging Research Center (ARC), a center for interdisciplinary research on health in aging that is a collaboration between Karolinska Institutet and Stockholm University. ARC will be located at the Karolinska Institutet Campus Solna from May 2018 on. The research group includes senior researchers, postdocs, doctoral students, and guest researchers. Unique Swedish resources ‒ such as several large prospective studies, nationwide research registers, record linkage capabilities, and access to clinical data and biological material ‒ are available at the center.

Most of the scientific activities are based on the ongoing population-based Swedish National Study on Aging and Care-Kungsholmen (SNAC-K), which includes people 60+ years who are followed up at regular intervals. The protocol includes extensive assessment of social, medical, biological, and genetic factors as well as a comprehensive cognitive battery. Further information is available at http://www.snac-k.se/.

Duties
Together with gerontologists, epidemiologists, and clinical researchers, the candidate will contribute to a new project on “Impact of multidimensional health trajectories on the use of medical and social care services by older people in Sweden”. The selected postdoc will be involved in all parts of the research process, ranging from generating research ideas, and application of novel methods in real-studies. Production of publications for submission to peer-reviewed journals, and other forms of dissemination will be central activities.

Teaching at first- and second-cycle level at KI may also be among the working tasks. In addition, the successful candidate is expected to contribute to data management and analyses for other projects carried out within the research group related to the biological, environmental, and behavioral determinants of multimorbidity, disability and frailty trajectories in older age. The candidate will also be engaged in writing applications for funding.

Entry requirements
A person is eligible to be appointed postdoc if she or he has been awarded a doctoral degree within the last 7 years. The candidate should have a background and skills in public health/epidemiology/biostatistics research and have his/her PhD in quantitative sciences, preferably within the research field of aging. Good programming skills (SAS/Stata/R) will be highly desirable. Documented skills in development and application of novel methods would be an advantage.

The applicant should have extensive hands-on experience in using and interpreting longitudinal/population-based data and register data. Excellent collaborative, communication and writing skills are needed. Very good English skills in speaking and writing are an absolute requirement for the position. Knowledge of Swedish will be positively evaluated.

Bases of assessment
We stress scientific expertise when assessing applicants.
