We are looking for an Assistant Professor to be a part of docent John Wallert’s Team Modelling, which is a part of the larger research group led by professor Christian Rück. As part of the research group at the Centre for Psychiatry Research, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, you will have the opportunity to work with leading researchers in psychiatric research. The research group works to improve the lives of individuals with severe psychiatric conditions by understanding the origins and consequences of these conditions and by developing treatments. We are a interdisciplinary and clinically integrated research environment where you will have the opportunity to contribute to high-quality research at the highest international level. The research group’s location at Psychiatry Southwest at Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge enables close collaboration with several psychiatric clinics, including five inpatient psychiatric wards.

Your mission 

You will work in several research projects within psychiatric epidemiology and psychological treatment research, with a primary focus on inpatient psychiatric care and compulsory care. You will lead research projects and are expected to supervise both doctoral candidates and students, as well as participate in clinical treatment work. The work includes data processing and advanced analyses, as well as writing manuscripts and grant applications. As an Assistant Professor, you are to pursue your own independent line of research focusing on epidemiology related to inpatient psychiatric care as well as psychological treatment studies within inpatient psychiatric care. You are expected to apply for and obtain research funding in competition, manage complex data, and successfully drive projects through to publication. You are also expected to present research results at international scientific conferences and to society at large through media, as well as participate in teaching at undergraduate and advanced levels and at doctoral level.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements 

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than seven years, normally, prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor. Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist.  

Special grounds refer to: 

  • parental leave, 
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations 
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces 
  • long-term illness 

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation. 

Appointment to the position of Assistant Professor requires good scientific skills and good pedagogical skills. (See the Instructions for the Appointment Procedure for teachers at Karolinska Institutet)

It is a requirement that you have completed three weeks of courses on teaching in higher education as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment. 

As the candidate needs to communicate with both international and national research colleagues as well as clinicians and patients, excellent spoken and written English and Swedish are required. 

Bases of assessment 

For this position, we are seeking a licensed psychologist with clinical experience in psychological treatment within psychiatry. To be considered, you should conduct active research in clinical psychiatry or psychology and psychiatric epidemiology, and have experience working with Swedish register data. In the assessment of applicants, we place particular emphasis on scientific and pedagogical expertise, especially in relation to the relevant research areas. 

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has demonstrated:
  • The ability to obtain independent research funding as the principal applicant in competitive settings
  • Scientific proficiency and experience resulting in multiple first- and/or senior-authored publications
  • Solid experience with various types of study designs and analytical methods in psychiatric epidemiology and psychological treatment research
  • Methodological expertise, for example documented through methodological publications
  • Experience working with large databases of different types, including linked data from multiple sources
  • Experience in teaching and in developing teaching materials at undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels
  • Experience in individual supervision of degree projects at undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as of doctoral candidates

It is also considered meritorious if the applicant has demonstrated:

  • Experience conducting clinical research within inpatient psychiatric care
  • A strong ability to work with different professional groups
  • Experience communicating research results to the general public
  • Experience working in accordance with principles of open science

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer.  Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
