The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine. The department is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.
Department of Laboratory Medicine, Division of Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine (BCM)
The Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine is one of the divisions at the Department of Laboratory Medicine. BCM provides the facilities needed for cell - molecular biology research and the possibility to perform research in vivo. With its particular position at the interface between basic science and clinical application, BCM has a unique opportunity to translate progress in biomedical research into new methods and principles for diagnosing and treating diseases.
As a scholarship holder, you will play a key role in driving our research on extracellular vesicle-mediated delivery of therapeutics. You will contribute to identifying disease-relevant targets and gain hands-on experience of the entire process of EV production and EV analysis.
This means that your work will encompass a broad set of laboratory techniques, including molecular cloning, cell culture, production and purification of extracellular vesicles, flow cytometry, protein studies (Western blot), and RNA expression analysis (RT-qPCR). In addition to lab studies, you will also conduct literature studies to identify new therapeutic opportunities. An important part of the role is also to regularly present your experimental results, literature insights, and overall progress to colleagues, supervisors, and mentors at weekly group meetings.
We are looking for a candidate with a strong interest in research on extracellular vesicles and the development of methods for nanoparticle analysis. Good communication skills are essential, as you will be working closely with a supportive team and regularly sharing your results and insights. Very good knowledge of English, both spoken and written, is a requirement.
You should have, or be in the process of obtaining, a master's degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related field. You should thrive in a collaborative environment, but also be able to work independently and show initiative. Experience with size exclusion chromatography and analytical methods such as electron microscopy or scattering-based nanoparticle analysis is an advantage.
Benefits
As a scholarship holder in our group, you will enjoy several benefits that contribute to your personal and professional development. You will gain practical experience of advanced molecular biology methods for therapeutic applications and the opportunity to develop in a creative and collaborative research environment. By working alongside experienced researchers and mentors, you will develop both your technical skills and your scientific communication skills.
These scholarships are intended to give undergraduate or advanced level students early practical experience of research work in order to strengthen the link between education and research and encourage future studies at postgraduate level.
The scholarships can be awarded either for studies within an existing course or for a shorter period of practical research experience (documented through an individual study plan/research plan) for admitted students at the undergraduate or advanced level. The scholarships may be awarded for a maximum of 12 months, divided into a maximum of four courses/periods, during the period of study.
The scholarships may only be awarded to:
• persons who are admitted (and registered in Ladok) to undergraduate or advanced level education at KI,
• persons who are admitted (and registered) to undergraduate or advanced level education at a university with which KI has a collaboration agreement.
In this case, the scholarship is awarded for 4 months.
