The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. CNS with its division of Eye and Vision has an extensive and successful line of research in the field of ophthalmology and optometry. The Division of Eye and Vision has a comprehensive assignment in education and is responsible for the ophthalmology training for medical students, optometry students and several other educations such as ophthalmic nurses and orthoptists.

In Tony Pansell’s research group at the Marianne Bernadotte Centre (MBC), you will find a unique opportunity to work closely with leading researchers in neuroscience. Your mission

Your research in visual physiology and eye movement control is expected to contribute to new knowledge and innovative applications that improve human health and quality of life. The position also entails a clear responsibility for teaching and pedagogical development at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels, with a particular focus on strengthening students’ and doctoral candidates’ competence in statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

Your responsibilities include:

  • Contributing to the educational activities at Karolinska Institutet through teaching, course development, and supervision at the undergraduate, advanced, and doctoral levels.
  • Strengthening education by integrating statistics, machine learning, and artificial intelligence into relevant course components.
  • Further developing methods for eye movement analysis, with a particular focus on machine learning and predictive modeling, as a resource for both research and education.
  • Applying for external research funding and conducting research with high potential for societal benefit.

Description of the subject area 

The subject area of the position is vision and neuroscience, with a focus on eye movements and their alterations in neurological diseases and conditions. The purpose of this recruitment is to strengthen the analytical competence within the field, specializing in machine learning and predictive modeling methods.

Eligibility requirements

Appointment to the position of assistant senior lecturer requires demonstrated pedagogical skills and scientific skills as demonstrated by a PhD or the equivalent scientific competence, or some other professional skills of significance to the nature of the appointment and the tasks and duties it entails. 

In order to be considered eligible for employment as an assistant lecturer, you must demonstrate good scientific skills and excellent pedagogical skills. See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet. 

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment. 

In addition, it is a requirement that you have:

  • Experience in eye movement research with a specific focus on analysis of eye movements aimed at identifying risk markers for neurological diseases and developmental conditions.
  • Experience in teaching statistics at university level, as well as experience in supervising doctoral projects focusing on eye movements and machine learning.
  • Fluent command of Swedish for effortless communication when meeting research participants.

Assessment criteria

For employment as assistant senior lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment. 

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated 

  • Experience with research involving different clinical populations and patient groups, particularly individuals with Parkinson’s or Alzheimer’s disease.
  • Documented ability to translate research findings into societal benefit, for example through innovation or entrepreneurship.
