The main goal of the research at the Unit of Integrative Epidemiology at The Institute of Environmental Medicine is to improve the understanding of the causes and consequences of ill health and disease, with a focus on neurodegenerative diseases, psychiatric disorders, and Covid 19. We strive for multidisciplinary approaches in epidemiologic research and integrate different scientific tools when addressing specific research questions. The Unit seeks an enthusiastic research assistant. The position is temporary for 6 months.

Your mission

The successful candidate will support and contribute to multiple research projects. Key responsibilities include data management; updating and maintaining existing databases; performing database quality control; documenting data management procedures; developing machine learning models; and conducting statistical analyses. The role requires the ability to work effectively in a highly interdisciplinary and international research environment, as well as a strong commitment to continuous professional development.

Your profile

Position requirements:

  • Advanced skills in data management and statistical analysis
  • A self-motivated curiosity in interpreting the neurological and biological basis of data science research findings.
  • A solid understanding of, and commitment to, data protection and General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR).
  • Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

Technical Requirements:

  • Experience with machine learning technologies like Tensorflow, PyTorch, and SHAP.
  • Experience in applying machine learning methods in brain development, predictive and preventative medicine, epidemiology, and/or public health research.
  • Research experience in high-performance computing environments.
  • Experience using DevOps tools (Github) and common industry formatting standards or tools (MyPy, Lint, recyclable code, and docstrings).

Nice To Have:

  • Experience understanding and interpreting sMRI and fMRI scans.
  • Experience conducting and interpreting functional connectivity analysis.
  • Prior experience in neurodegenerative disorder research and register-based epidemiological research.
  • Prior research publications demonstrating an ability to apply machine learning techniques to different types of data.
  • Knowledge of neural signaling, de-myelination, and/or neurochemical imbalances (natural or drug induced).
