The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institute. At IMM we conduct advanced research and education in environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology and biostatistics with a focus on clarifying how environmental and lifestyle factors affect human health. The postdoc position will be hosted by the Unit of Metals and Health. The aim of the research at the unit is to identify toxic effects of metals in the general and in the work environment, to understand causal relationships between metal exposure and various diseases, and how susceptibility factors influence these relationships. We also study mechanisms of particle toxicity with a focus on metal and combustion-generated particles. We combine in vitro testing, in vitro-in vivo correlations, bioinformatics and molecular epidemiology approaches. We now search for a postdoctoral researcher with competence in particle toxicology.
The successful candidate will conduct toxicological studies on particles generated during (i) fires involving various novel materials (e.g., new building materials, e-waste) and (ii) the reuse or recycling of old building materials (e.g., bricks, mortar). The research will primarily be in vitro and will combine traditional toxicological assays with toxicogenomics and new approach methodologies for cancer potency assessment. In addition, the candidate will analyse human exposure data from firefighters exposed to emissions from different types of fires. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will be actively involved in all stages of the project, including experimental design, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.
The position is a full-time position for 2 years.
We are looking for a highly motivated postdoctoral fellow who can work independently and develop their own ideas and visions and with a strong scientific drive. The successful applicant must have a Ph.D. from an appropriate background such as toxicology, biology, biochemistry or equivalent with documented experience working with in vitro toxicity testing of particles or particulate matter.
It is highly meritorious if the candidate has documented experience of previously working with:
The candidate must be able to work well in a team with researchers from different disciplines, have good collaboration and communication skills and must be able to communicate well in English, both orally and in writing. In addition, personal suitability will also be a factor in the selection process.
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
