- with focus on research
The Department of Laboratory Medicine (LabMed) at Karolinska Institutet (KI) consists of seven divisions conducting research and education in pathology, clinical pharmacology, clinical physiology, clinical chemistry, clinical microbiology, clinical immunology, and transfusion medicine. The divisions work in close collaboration with the corresponding clinical laboratory specialties within Medical Diagnostics Karolinska. LabMed is characterized by a translational research profile, built on strong synergies between basic scientific, technical/bioanalytical, and clinical expertise, with excellent access to clinical materials and extensive external collaborations. LabMed also has substantial teaching responsibilities and is involved in 10 of KI’s 19 undergraduate programmes, as well as offering a wide range of courses at the doctoral level.
The subject of Clinical Pharmacology encompasses research, education, drug development, and healthcare services focused on rational and individualized use of medicines. The therapeutic response to most drugs varies substantially between patients, often requiring both clinical and laboratory-based monitoring. Over recent decades, a range of techniques has been developed to characterize the mechanisms underlying this variability and to implement tools that support individualized treatment decisions. At the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, research is conducted partly in collaboration with Karolinska University Hospital’s accredited state-of-the-art bioanalysis platforms as well as its clinical trial unit for early-phase studies. In recent years, expertise has been strengthened in population-based pharmacokinetic modelling, while pharmacometric competence—including pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic modelling (PK/PD modelling), which quantifies the relationships between drug concentration, time, and clinical effect—and its translation into clinical questions are increasingly in demand across KI and within healthcare. This development aligns closely with the joint ambition of KI and Karolinska University Hospital to advance the concept of precision medicine for highly specialized care.
We are seeking to recruit a world-leading researcher in pharmacology, with a documented ability to build research environments, generate new knowledge in the field, and establish interdisciplinary collaborations. The research focus will primarily concern pharmacological modelling aimed at developing improved tools for optimizing clinical drug therapy (Model-Informed Precision Dosing), as well as tools supporting drug development. You are expected to take on leadership responsibilities within Clinical Pharmacology and Labmed, thereby strengthening the department’s research environment, enhancing collaboration with Clinical Pharmacology at Karolinska University Hospital, and contributing externally through professional networks at both national and international levels. The Department of Clinical Pharmacology also has extensive educational responsibilities within the field, and you will be expected to teach pharmacology in the medical, dental, biomedical, biomedical laboratory science, and nursing programmes.
