Karolinska Institutet, Department of Oncology-Pathology, Lehtiö research group

At the Department of Oncology-Pathology, basic, translational, clinical research, and educational activities related to cancer are carried out. Approximately 300 people from over 40 nations are currently working at the department. About 30 research groups with various cancer research profiles are involved, and we have around 110 PhD students. The Department of Oncology-Pathology is responsible for undergraduate courses in pathology, oncology, and forensic medicine for medical students, as well as for tumor biology courses for biomedicine students and pathology courses for opticians. The Lehtiö research group is a translational group of scientists with a drive to improve human proteome analysis by developing new methods that can be applied to improve personalized.

Description of the subject area

The position will be placed in the Cancer proteomics Mass spectrometry research group headed by Professor Janne Lehtiö at Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab). Karolinska Institutet is one of the four founding universities for SciLifeLab, which is today a national infrastructure and research center in technology driven life sciences. Lehtiö group is a translational group of scientists with a drive to improve human proteome analysis by developing new methods that can be applied to improve personalized cancer treatment. At present we seek to strengthen our research group with an outstanding scientist with proven expertise in mathematical data analysis to develop novel proteogenomics analysis for systems biology and precision medicine cancer research using geometric and topological methods. The employment is a permanent position with a trial period of 6 months. We offer a very stimulating and diverse work environment in a team of highly motivated co-workers with expertise in cutting-edge technology.

Your mission

We are seeking a highly motivated mathematician with strong expertise in topological data analysis (TDA) and a deep interest in applying advanced mathematical frameworks to clinical proteomics and genomics. The ideal candidate will develop innovative models that leverage geometric and topological properties of multi-omics datasets to identify cancer-associated protein modules and advance precision oncology.

Tasks for the position:

  • Conduct research on integrating topological data analysis with cancer precision medicine, including modeling and analysis of multi-omics data
  • Conceptualize, design and drive projects on cancer multi-omics data analysis methods development and serve as an expert on applied mathematics
  • Study the mathematical properties of topological invariants and develop methods based on these invariants with the goal of improving computability and interpretability in the context of cancer precision medicine
  • Develop and implement algorithms for topological analysis of multi-omics data
  • Prepare publishable scientific articles presenting research results
  • Assist in the supervision of graduate students and postdocs
  • Attract external funding and establish industrial and academic collaborations both nationally and internationally

Eligibility requirements

For employment as Research Specialist at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements stated in the Guidelines for non-teaching positions at Karolinska Institutet are applied in relation to the established profile of employment.

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented postdoctoral research experience.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • PhD in mathematics, computer science or similar
  • Several years of postdoctoral experience
  • Expertise in topological and geometric methods, including on their applications in the biomedical sciences
  • Experience of collaboration between different disciplines.
  • A proven academic track record
  • Good knowledge in English, oral and written.
  • Excellent communications skills
  • Experience in translational science

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Teaching experience
  • Understanding of cancer research

Since the position involves close interaction with several researchers in different fields, emphasis is placed on personal skills such as:

-Very good collaborative skills

-Excellent communication skills and analytical skills.

In assessing the candidates, suitability for the position, experience in the above specified methods, and experience in the field, will form the basis for the selection of this recruitment.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
