- with focus on education and research
Do you want to contribute to improving human health?
The Department of Clinical Research and Education, Södersjukhuset (KI SÖS) conducts internationally recognized research focusing on common diseases and medical conditions, as well as education from undergraduate to doctoral level. The goal of all activities is to improve human health. One of our most dynamic research areas is prehospital emergency care, where KI SÖS has contributed to groundbreaking research. The department is also responsible for the specialist program in ambulance care. Prehospital emergency care is an area with great potential to save lives, reduce suffering, and ease the burden on emergency hospitals!
Description of the subject area
At KI SÖS and Södersjukhuset, research in prehospital emergency care focuses on prioritization, diagnostics, and treatment of critically ill patients before hospital admission. The subject of prehospital emergency care also serves as a central knowledge base for the education and professional development of ambulance care personnel. Region Stockholm has an extensive prehospital system, with over 200,000 emergency calls via 112 to SOS Alarm annually, followed by interventions from ambulance services. Early identification and treatment of acute conditions are crucial for patient outcomes. This research area has great potential to reduce the burden on emergency hospitals, optimize care pathways, and save lives in life-threatening situations. The field has rapidly evolved through new technology and knowledge, enabling advanced interventions close to the patient, such as AI-assisted ECG interpretation, remote monitoring, and point-of-care diagnostics. Research is conducted in close collaboration between several stakeholders: Karolinska Institutet, Södersjukhuset, Region Stockholm, and national actors such as SOS Alarm and AISAB.
