The research group Ocular Oncology and Pathology at the Division of Eye and Vision, Department of Clinical Neuroscience, Karolinska Institutet, is seeking to recruit a postdoctoral researcher. The research group’s facilities are located at St. Erik Eye Hospital, where you will work at the interface between clinic and laboratory, with direct relevance for patients with eye cancer. As a postdoctoral researcher, you will lead our research, focusing primarily on uveal melanoma, with excellent opportunities to develop your own research profile and advance your academic career.

Your mission

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will:

  • Design, conduct and follow up research projects in ocular oncology, with a main focus on uveal melanoma.
  • Analyse clinical, pathological and molecular genetic data, including next generation sequencing data.
  • Prepare and coordinate applications for external research funding.
  • Supervise and support PhD students and junior researchers within the group, and contribute to the recruitment process together with the research group leader.
  • Lead and coordinate project teams, collaborating closely with clinicians, pathologists, statisticians and other national and international partners.
  • Contribute to the design and conduct of clinical trials, including protocol development, data collection and analysis.
  • Write and co-author scientific manuscripts and present research findings at national and international meetings.

The position is closely linked to the clinical activities at St. Erik Eye Hospital.

Your profile

The following qualifications are required for this position:

  • Documented experience of experimental and/or clinical research.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English.
  • A strong ability to work both independently and in collaboration with others, and to drive projects forward. 

The following qualifications are considered merits:

  • Previous research experience in oncology, ophthalmology, ocular oncology or pathology.
  • Experience in applying for and obtaining external research grants.
  • Skills in genetic and bioinformatic analyses, particularly of next generation sequencing data.
  • Experience with survival analyses and other statistical analyses of clinical data.
  • Experience from, or strong interest in, participation in clinical trials.
  • Documented experience of supervising students or PhD candidates.
  • Clear long-term ambition to continue in ocular research and to progress along the academic career track. 
  • Ability to communicate in Swedish.

Great emphasis will be placed on personal fit and personal qualities, including accuracy, responsibility, collaborative skills and a genuine interest in translational research aiming to improve survival and reduce suffering in patients with ocular cancer.

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a PhD within the medical field or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required (a PhD within ophthalmology, oncology or pathology is considered a merit). This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
