Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in, further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb

We welcome applications for up to two full-time postdoctoral researchers to join our multi-disciplinary team focused on precision medicine in cardio-renal diseases. Our research spans large-scale register and laboratory data, causal and predictive modeling, and computational image analysis of kidney biopsies.

About the Research Group:

Led by Professor Juan-Jesús Carrero, each member brings together strengths ranging from epidemiology, biostatistics, and data science to clinical medicine. We have active collaborations both across the country and globally within academia, healthcare organizations, and industry.

Our current focus areas are:

  • Individualizing health trajectories of chronic kidney disease etiologies: exploring their association with health outcomes, beyond estimated glomerular filtration rate and albuminuria levels.
  • Risk-based clinical decision support: Developing tools and frameworks to guide decisions using individualized risk prediction metrics to optimize patient care.
  • Identifying and addressing care gaps: Evaluating disparities in clinical management, assessing their impact and evaluating targeted interventions to improve them.
  • Optimizing knowledge of treatment effects: Using causal inference methods to rigorously assess the safety and effectiveness of medications in real-world patient populations.
  • Defining individualized treatment strategies: Leveraging traditional and causal machine learning approaches to determine which patients are most likely to benefit from specific therapies.
  • Digital pathology and image-based analyses (starting): Developing and applying computational methods to analyze kidney biopsy images and correlate image features with health outcomes and response to treatments.

Our databases and research:

We primarily work on two unique data sources hosted by our group: The Stockholm CREAtinine Measurements (SCREAM) project and The Swedish Kidney Pathology (SKIP) project, encompassing health data of more than 9 Million people. You can read more about these data bases, our group and recent publications on our webpage

Your mission

We seek dedicated and creative postdoctoral researchers to join our team and develop together our research portfolio, maximizing reach and clinical impact.

While you will be part of a multidisciplinary team and carry out collaborative research projects, we also expect you to generate new ideas and develop your own research lines and interests.

You will be coached by our senior team members, and expect you to coach PhD and master students in the pursuance of their projects.

You will develop analysis plans, protocols, ethical submissions, and funding application submissions as required for ongoing and future studies. You will generate and analyze large data assets, adapt existing and develop new research methodologies and materials.

You will report research findings in the form of conference abstracts at national and international conferences and scientific publications.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

We are seeking strong postdoctoral researchers with:

  • A PhD in Medicine, Pharmacy, Biostatistics, Epidemiology, Computer Science, Image Analysis, or another quantitative discipline.
  • Achieved proficiency in statistical programming (e.g., R or Python) and familiarity with advanced analytical techniques (e.g., causal inference, machine learning, time-to-event analysis).
  • Interest in medicine or clinical epidemiology and capability to transfer methods to actionable health solutions.
  • Effective communication skills and ability to collaborate with various partners from clinical, academic, and public-health fields.
  • Prior experience with register or large-scale health data is a bonus but not a requirement.

Please elaborate in your motivation letter on how you can contribute to our team and what research focus areas you feel most attracted to and/or capable of contribution. We would seek to recruit two complementary profiles to fit in the team´s strategy.
