Karolinska Institutet, Department of Medicine, Huddinge

- with focus on education and research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical education and research?

The Department of Medicine in Huddinge is one of Karolinska Institutet’s largest departments, responsible for education and research in internal medicine at Karolinska Institutet’s southern campus in Flemingsberg. The research covers basic, translational, and clinical projects within the broad field of internal medicine. The cardiology clinical operations at Karolinska University Hospital in Huddinge are extensive and successful, particularly in interventional cardiology, arrhythmias, heart failure, and cardio-oncology. The internal medicine education at the department is closely linked to the clinical cardiology operations, and as a senior lecturer with a combined appointment, you will become an important figure in the academic cardiology environment with a combined educational and research assignment.

Description of the subject area

Cardiology is one of the largest internal medicine specialties and constitutes an extensive activity at Karolinska University Hospital Huddinge, both clinically and in terms of research. A clinical area of activity of significant importance and which has expanded very strongly in recent years is advanced treatment of various arrhythmias. In this area, catheter-borne ablation treatment is developing rapidly. With over 1,700 procedures per year, Karolinska University Hospital is currently the largest centers in the Nordic region and one of the largest in Europe in invasive electrophysiology. Most of the operations (three laboratories out of four) are located at Karolinska Huddinge.

In addition to electrophysiology, the full spectrum of modern clinical arrhythmia activities is conducted, including cardio-genetics and cardio-oncology. In the field of cardio-oncology, clinical and experimental studies are also conducted in parallel, which is particularly important given the integration of clinical cardiology with experimental research groups within the department's newly formed unit "Integrative Cardiovascular, Cancer and Ageing unit" (ICCA).

Your mission

Medical education is currently undergoing significant changes to meet scientific and technological advances as well as changing healthcare needs. This includes the integration of digital methods and simulation tools with an increased focus on inter-professional collaboration, early clinical exposure, team-based learning and person-centered care. At the same time, the role of education needs to be strengthened in an increasingly production-driven healthcare environment without jeopardizing the education's research connection.

For these reasons, we want to recruit a senior lecturer with a combined position who will take responsibility for undergraduate education at the department as director of undergraduate education, but also for parts of the course in internal medicine in the medical program. To ensure that the teaching is related to research, it is important that you conduct and develop your own research in parallel.

Knowledge of heart disease is a central component in the education of all doctors, and you are therefore a cardiologist with extensive clinical experience. You have a pedagogical interest, qualifications in teaching and are interested in taking responsibility for parts of the department's undergraduate education in internal medicine. Your own research is of high quality and fits into the research profile of the department and the cardiology department. You have the ambition to develop your research in parallel with your work in education.
