Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Liver diseases constitute a rapidly growing and dynamic research area with many unanswered questions and significant opportunities for a long-term scientific career. The Hagström research group at Karolinska Institutet has a long tradition of clinical and epidemiological studies in liver diseases, particularly in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). We are located at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge — an inclusive workplace that encourages collaboration and interdisciplinary research.

We are now looking for 1–2 dedicated postdoctoral researchers with experience in epidemiology or biostatistics to join a new and exciting project aimed at improving the identification of, and reducing the risk for, severe liver disease.

With us, you will have the opportunity to work with unique datasets and contribute to new knowledge on liver diseases through research at the international forefront, with potential to improve human health. We offer a stimulating and interdisciplinary research environment where you will contribute to high-quality research at a globally competitive level. There is close collaboration with epidemiologists, clinicians, and research groups both nationally and internationally.

Your mission

The aim of this position is to evaluate models for early identification of liver disease, examine how risk evolves over time, and assess how it is influenced by medications. The hope is that this work will lead to simplified identification of at-risk individuals and appropriate treatment—ultimately saving lives.

We are particularly looking for applicants with experience in prediction models and biomarker evaluation, causal inference, longitudinal methods, survival analysis, regression models or machine learning. Applicants from clinical hepatology with experience in the above fields can also be interesting.

You will work in an interdisciplinary and international research environment. Our department provides excellent opportunities to participate in various research forums, both internally and externally. For those interested, there may also be opportunities for teaching.  The position is a two-year fixed-term appointment, with the possibility of extension.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

You hold a PhD in, for example, clinical medicine, epidemiology, or biostatistics, or another relevant field with a strong research profile. We also welcome applicants with other suitable backgrounds. Previous experience with the Swedish healthcare system and work with Swedish register data is meritorious. Experience in prediction models and biomarkers, causal inference, longitudinal methods, survival analysis, regression modelling, or machine learning is required.

You are expected to have excellent skills in spoken and written English, documented experience in writing and publishing scientific articles in high-impact journals, and strong social and collaborative skills. We value independence in designing and driving research projects. You have experience with statistical software such as R, SAS, or STATA.

Personal qualities we are looking for include:

  • A driven personality and the ability to make independent decisions
  • Strong collaborative skills within and beyond the research group
  • A team player with social competence and empathy
  • Curiosity and openness to learning from other research fields
  • Structured and flexible working style

We place great emphasis on personal suitability.
