The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institute. At IMM we conduct advanced research and education in environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, epidemiology and biostatistics with a focus on clarifying how environmental and lifestyle factors affect human health. The postdoc position will be hosted at the Unit of Biochemical Toxicology at IMM. The research at the unit aims at understanding the connection between exposure to chemicals and complex negative health effects, such as cancer and effects caused by endocrine disruption. One of our areas of focus is to develop novel methodologies for health risk assessment of chemicals that incorporate the latest scientific developments and meet the needs of decision makers.
This postdoc position will focus on the development of novel approaches to assessment and identification of endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) that maximize the use of New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) and meet regulatory needs. The work will be anchored in Adverse Outcome Pathway (AOP) methodology and the postdoctoral researcher will use AOPs and AOP networks to organize, integrate and interpret toxicological (in silico, in vitro, in vivo) data relevant for regulatory assessment of EDCs. The postdoctoral researcher will be expected to contribute to developing quantitative AOPs and AOP networks, apply AOPs and NAMs in case studies to identify EDCs, as well as writing scientific articles. The position does not entail any practical laboratory work.
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
We are looking for an ambitious, highly motivated postdoctoral researcher with a documented background in research related to endocrine disruption in humans, assessment of EDCs, and experience with AOPs and NAMs. A solid knowledge of the principles of endocrine disruption, including mechanisms and effects on the endocrine system is required. Solid knowledge and understanding of the development or application of the AOP framework is also required. Experience with dose-response modelling and analysis of transcriptomics data is highly meritorious. Basic understanding of regulatory assessment of EDCs and knowledge of systematic review methodology and WoE assessment is desired.
The candidate should be able to work well within a team, have good cooperation and communication skills and should communicate well in English, both orally and in writing.
The position is for two years, with the possibility to extend it for one more years.
