Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

Do you want to contribute to improving human health?

Join Dr. Silvia Maioli's laboratory at the Division of Neurogeriatrics, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences, and Society, Karolinska Institutet. Our research focuses on uncovering the molecular mechanisms underlying risk factors for neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular emphasis on sex differences and the role of cholesterol metabolism in Alzheimer's disease. Located at BioClinicum, Solna Campus, our lab offers a stimulating, supportive, and interdisciplinary scientific environment with access to state-of-the-art facilities and opportunities for professional growth.

Your mission

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will lead an innovative research project to elucidate the role of brain cholesterol metabolism in male and female mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease pathology. Your work will involve both pharmacological and genetic manipulations, including surgical procedures for viral vector-mediated gene expression, behavioral assays, both standard and automated, to assess cognitive and motor functions, immunohistochemistry, molecular techniques such as ELISA, RT-PCR, and protein analysis, and analysis of transcriptomics and metabolomics data. In-depth molecular mechanisms will also be studied in in vitro systems.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

The ideal candidate holds a Ph.D. in neuroscience or neurobiology, has a strong publication record with first-author papers, and demonstrates extensive expertise in in vivo experimental procedures. This includes a broad range of mouse behavioral testing, molecular and cellular biology techniques (ELISA, RT-PCR, immunohistochemistry, western blot) as well as strong proficiency in statistical programming using R and experience in -omics data analysis. Excellent organizational abilities, communication skills in English, and the capacity to work effectively in a collaborative research environment are also essential.

We are looking for an enthusiastic, dedicated, and highly motivated researcher who thrives in a collaborative team setting, is open to multidisciplinary interactions, and is willing to mentor master's and PhD students. If you are passionate about advancing our understanding of neurodegenerative diseases, we encourage you to apply.
