Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of 6 divisions and is active in many areas of Laboratory Medicine to promote human health in short and long term. The department has close collaboration with Karolinska Hospital and is involved in advanced basic scientific, clinical, and epidemiological research. The department is one of the largest departments of education at Karolinska Institutet.

The ideal candidates will possess a strong educational background in biomedical sciences coupled with extensive practical experience in the laboratory related to lipoproteins. Our group works at the forefront of determining functional metrics of lipoproteins related to cardiometabolic diseases, including atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and liver diseases.

Your mission

We are seeking a highly motivated Research Assistant with a strong background in biomedical sciences and practical laboratory experience in working with lipoproteins, particularly with respect to metabolism, isolation and determining functional metrics. The successful candidate will contribute to the analysis of HDL functionality from both human samples and mouse models, and work with mass spectrometry to delineate aspects of lipid and protein composition of HDL particles. Combining wet-lab experiments with computational tools will allow to investigate underlying mechanisms that result in disease phenotypes.

Your profile

To be eligible for this position, the applicant is expected to have a solid understanding of how lipid and lipoprotein metabolism is regulated and be familiar with aspects of HDL function as well as the clinical features and therapeutic strategies associated with cardiometabolic diseases. The candidates must hold, or be close to completing, a master’s degree in biomedical science or a closely related field.

An interdisciplinary background spanning biology, biochemistry, physiology, and bioinformatics is highly desirable as is a deep understanding of metabolic and functional aspects of HDL. Advantage will be given to candidates that are in addition experienced in a variety of laboratory techniques, including but not limited to cell culture, PCR, RNA sequencing, immunohistochemistry, HDL isolation, HDL function assays, Western blot, ELISA as well as in working with preclinical animal models. Experience in bioinformatics and programming (R or Python). Experience with human biopsy handling, flow cytometry, mass spectrometry and other omics data generation is advantageous but not mandatory.

The ideal candidates will demonstrate a high level of independence, a collaborative mindset, and a strong interest in interdisciplinary research. Excellent interpersonal skills, effective communication in English, and a proactive, solution-oriented approach are essential.
