- with focus on education and research
Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?
The Department of Physiology and Pharmacology (FyFa) conducts education and research in physiology, pharmacology, anesthesiology and intensive care at a high international level. The department has about 400 employees, 30 research groups, and 75 doctoral students. We offer a dynamic research and teaching environment in newly renovated premises in the newly built Biomedicum at Campus Solna, which is linked to corresponding clinical teaching and research environments at the Department of Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care at Karolinska University Hospital. The research activities at the department include the fields of anesthesiology and intensive care, traumatology, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, neuropsychopharmacology, neuroinflammation, cellular signaling, pharmacogenetics, regenerative medicine, renal physiology, muscle physiology, and pain. The collaboration between preclinical and clinical researchers at Karolinska University Hospital provides excellent opportunities for translational research.
Anesthesiology and Intensive Care is a combined academic and clinical field, which also constitutes a medical specialty comprising the clinical activities of perioperative medicine and intensive care. The subject area is dominated by applied physiology and pharmacology and has for several decades had its academic development strongly linked to FyFa. The Section of Anesthesiology and Intensive Care at FyFa was established in 2005 and conducts internationally leading research and education primarily in anesthesiology and intensive care. The academic activities take place in close collaboration with Region Stockholm's clinical operations in perioperative medicine and intensive care and have for more than 15 years been an integrated part of the anesthesia, surgery, and intensive care activities at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna.
The clinical activities in anesthesiology and intensive care at Karolinska University Hospital are comprised of a hospital-wide organization called the Function Perioperative Medicine and Intensive Care (PMI), to which the majority of the clinical researchers and teachers at the department are affiliated. Karolinska University Hospital has one of the largest intensive care services for adult and pediatric patients in Sweden. At the hospital in Solna, in addition to a central intensive care unit (CICU), there are subspecialized units for thoracic (THICU), neuro (NICU), and pediatric intensive care (PICU), as well as the ECMO unit – all of which are closely linked to the academic activities within the section at FyFa. At the hospital in Huddinge, there is an intensive care unit with specific assignments for, among other things, highly specialized gastrointestinal surgery, transplantation, and contagious diseases.
A research platform in anesthesiology and intensive care, consisting of an experimental unit, a unit for clinical research, and a unit for outcomes research and epidemiology, has for several years been established with joint funding from Karolinska Institutet and Region Stockholm. At the section, there is a well-established translational research laboratory with access to cell and animal experimental models closely linked to technical platforms for genomics and proteomics and biochemical analyses on cell, animal, and human materials. The laboratory is an important basic scientific resource and is closely linked to both clinical and epidemiological research in anesthesiology and intensive care.
The section, together with Function PMI and with support from strategic R&D funding from KI and Region Stockholm, is now strengthening the infrastructure with investments in routine biobanking linked to high-resolution patient data to enable precision medicine and mechanistic research on a very large patient base.
