We are looking for a research assistant in the research group of Dr. Axel Abelein. The research group studies protein misfolding and amyloid structures related to neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. The working space is located in Neo, KI Campus South in Flemingsberg, at the Department of Medicine Huddinge. The group is part of the laboratory of bioinspired protein drugs and technologies, hosting three groups with researchers at different career stages. Hence, the lab provides a stimulating and supportive environment for young scientists who like to develop their biochemical/biophysical skills.
More information about the group and research can be found at our homepage: Axel Abeleins research group and https://ki.se/en/medh/research-at-the-department-of-medicine-huddinge/center-for-reproduction-metabolism-and-molecular-medicine-cerm/laboratory-for-bioinspired-protein-drugs-and-technologies
You will contribute to research projects concerning the study of anti-amyloid molecular chaperones, in particular the BRICHOS domain, and their inhibitory effect on amyloid formation in neurodegenerative disorders, such as Alzheimer’s disease and Parkinson’s disease. The projects are multidisciplinary and combine protein biochemistry and structural biology in the context of neurodegenerative diseases. The research assistant will assist in experimental work related to these projects and will plan the experiments, analyze the data and interpret and summarize the results. The work will be conducted both independently and together with other team members.
This project covers many areas, including gene cloning and mutagenesis, recombinant protein production and purification both in E.coli and mammalian cells, analytical biochemistry assays, optical spectroscopy and protein aggregation kinetics. Suitable backgrounds of the candidate include studies in (bio-)chemistry, (bio-)physics, biotechnology, life science, biomedicine, or similar topics.
The candidate should have theoretical knowledge and practical experience in at least some of the described biochemical and/or biophysical techniques. Experience in working with molecular chaperone-like proteins in the context of amyloid formation is advantageous.
The successful candidate is expected to have a strong drive to pursue research, be organized and structured, work independently and have an ambitious and innovative attitude. The project is cross-disciplinary and pursued in collaboration with other research groups, and hence good collaborative skills are necessary. Emphasis will be put on personal skills in the evaluation process. Very good ability to speak and write in English is a requirement.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact the group leader.
