Karolinska Institutet, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society

The Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS) conducts world leading research in aging, dementia, epidemiology and care sciences. This research extends from basic molecular and cell levels to clinical research and societal studies. NVS educates almost a third of KI students at basic and advanced levels. The Department has approximately 540 employees and a revenue 2023 of 530 million SEK. It comprises seven divisions, located at Campus Flemingsberg and Campus Solna.

Aging Research Center (ARC), a division within NVS, is located at KI Campus Solna, Stockholm. It is a multidisciplinary academic environment, representing medicine (e.g., neurology, epidemiology, psychiatry, geriatrics), psychology (e.g., cognition, structural, functional, and molecular brain imaging), and social gerontology (e.g., sociology, public health, social epidemiology, social work). The center has around 70 employees, it has a strong focus on research with unique research resources, such as large-scale longitudinal studies and nationwide registries.

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The present position is part of a project aiming to advance our understanding of how kidney function and diet interact in shaping the onset and progression of multimorbidity in older adults. Multimorbidity (the co-occurrence of multiple chronic diseases) is one of the most pressing challenges for healthcare systems worldwide, often progressing to complex or rapidly evolving forms that severely impact quality of life. Kidney function decline and poor diet quality are both highly prevalent in old age and share biological pathways with multimorbidity, yet they often go unnoticed until irreversible damage occurs. Understanding these interrelationships could open new avenues for prevention, shifting the focus from treating advanced disease to delaying or averting its development.

Taking advantage of rich longitudinal data from multiple Swedish population-based cohorts within the National E-infrastructure for Aging Research, including the Swedish National Study on Aging and Care (SNAC), this project will integrate repeated measures of kidney function, detailed dietary assessments, and extensive clinical information. Our goal is to generate evidence that supports early, targeted strategies to reduce the burden of multimorbidity and enable older adults to maintain better health for longer.
