Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

We are looking for a highly motivated research assistant to join the Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine research team, within the Division of Environmental Physiology led by Prof. Gunnar Schulte. This is a full-time, fixed-term position for 1 year, based at the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology, a dynamic and international environment known for its collaborative research culture.

Our research group investigates the physiological and biochemical mechanisms underlying decompression sickness, immersion pulmonary edema, and loss of consciousness during underwater activities. By integrating molecular, physiological, and cognitive approaches, we aim to develop targeted interventions—from optimized dive profiles to innovative preconditioning strategies—that enhance diver safety, resilience, and performance in real-world operational settings.

Your mission

We are seeking a curious and motivated individual with a genuine interest in research and solid hands-on laboratory experience.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Handling and processing biological samples.
  • Conducting standard Molecular Biology procedures (ELISA, EIA, PCR/qPCR).
  • Performing basic physiological (e.g., heart rate, blood pressure) and cognitive tests on human volunteers.
  • Monitoring human volunteers during controlled sleep deprivation confinements.

Other similar tasks may occur.

Your profile

You must have substantial, documented experience with all four key molecular biology techniques listed above. Proven prior experience working in a research laboratory environment is essential. Prior experience with diving and respiratory physiology is considered a strong merit. Additional skills in programming or statistical data analysis (e.g., R, Python, MATLAB, or SPSS) are also considered valuable assets.

We are also looking for someone who demonstrates the following soft skills:

  • Strong organizational abilities
  • Clear and effective communication
  • Proactive attitude and initiative-taking
  • Willingness to engage in critical scientific discussions and respectfully challenge ideas
