Your mission

As Assistant Senior Lecturer, you will develop and lead independent research that bridges molecular mechanisms of host–virus interaction with translational perspectives relevant to clinical virology. You are expected to contribute actively to the teaching portfolio at the Department of Laboratory Medicine, including the Biomedical Laboratory Science (BMA) program, Master's-level courses, and doctoral education.

You will:

  • Conduct high-quality independent research in virology and infection biology.
  • Develop research proposals and secure external funding.
  • Teach and coordinate courses at BMA, Master's, and doctoral levels.
  • Supervise undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students.
  • Contribute to course design, educational development, and examination.
  • Participate in collaborative research within and beyond the department.

Description of the subject area 

The position is in clinical microbiology with a focus on viral pathogenesis, immune evasion, and systems-level approaches to host–pathogen interactions. Research in this area supports improved understanding of viral diseases and contributes to translational efforts in diagnostics and therapeutic development. The successful applicant is expected to integrate basic and applied virology in a translational context and to actively share and translate this knowledge through education at the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels.

Eligibility requirements

Appointment to the position of assistant senior lecturer requires demonstrated pedagogical skills and scientific skills as demonstrated by a PhD or the equivalent scientific competence, or some other professional skills of significance to the nature of the appointment and the tasks and duties it entails. 

In order to be considered eligible for employment as an assistant lecturer, you must demonstrate good scientific skills and excellent pedagogical skills. See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet. 

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment. 

Experience in teaching and examining across multiple academic levels, including undergraduate, master's, and doctoral education, as well as course coordination, is considered highly valuable for this position.

Assessment criteria

For employment as assistant senior lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment. 

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated 

  • A strong and independent research profile in virology or host–pathogen interactions.
  • Experience with research integrating systems biology or clinical translational approaches.
  • Success in acquiring external research funding.
  • Documented course coordination or teaching leadership at university level.

It is meritorious that you have demonstrated 

  • Supervision experience at master's and doctoral levels.
  • Participation in interdisciplinary or international research collaborations.
  • Engagement in development of educational material.
