Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC has about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

We are looking for a research assistant to work in Erik Benson's group at Scilifelab campus Solna. The group's focus is to use DNA nanotechnology to develop libraries of structures with great diversity. We then perform selection experiments and sequencing to find the structures that have the best properties. The goal is to develop alternatives to antibodies that are quick to produce and detectable by sequencing. As a member of the group, you will be part of Scilifelab as well as part of the unit for microbiology-bacteriology at Karolinska Institutet.

Your mission

Antibodies are essential for modern research, diagnostics, and therapy, but they have problems with reproducibility and development time for new pathogens. We are looking for a research assistant interested in using DNA to develop alternatives focusing on diagnostics. In diagnostics, we want to focus on rapid tests for bacterial proteins and viruses. The project may include experimental techniques such as DNA design, biochemistry work including selection experiments, nanopore sequencing, and measuring binding strength. Additionally, the project may involve computer work such as analysis of sequencing data, and 2D and 3D simulation of DNA structures.

Your profile

You are motivated and interested in developing new methods within life science and have a strong interest in learning new techniques. Preferably you have a background in biomedicine or physics/engineering. Further, you should have a master's degree completed before the start of the position.

Requirements for the role:

  • Experience working in a biomedical laboratory

  • Experience handling DNA sequencing data

Merits for the role:

  • Previous work with bacterial pathogens

  • Experience with selection techniques
