The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.
Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). The department is situated at campus Solna. Further information can be found at http://ki.se/en/meb
The Research Group
We are looking for a student to join the Modelling and Simulation (with applications to cancer epidemiology and health economics) research group at the Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics at Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm. The group conducts research in how to use the Swedish health and population registers to evaluate the effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of different interventions and strategies. Our main applications are in cancer screening and treatment areas. The research group includes biostatisticians, epidemiologists and health economists.
The scholarship recipient will learn about the theory and numerical implementations of semi-Markov multi-state models. The recipient will investigate cohort-based approaches for semi-Markov illness-death models to predict prevalence using relative survival, and then apply such approaches to more general semi-Markov models. With close supervision, the recipient will write R implementations for these models and then apply these methods to (a) cancer prevalence and (b) cost-effectiveness analysis. The student will learn about these different statistical methods and will receive an undergraduate scholarship.
These scholarships aim to give undergraduate or advanced-level students early practical experience in research to strengthen the connection between education and research and to encourage future doctoral studies. The scholarships can be awarded either for studies within an existing course or for a short period of practical research experience (documented through an individual study plan/research plan) for admitted undergraduate or advanced-level students.
You should have a strong interest in mathematics, biostatistics and scientific programming, and be motivated to help advance the field. You should preferably be familiar with relevant research in survival analysis, including relative survival and illness-death models.
