Research Project

Dietary Nitrate and non-heme iron in Diabetes

  • The signaling molecule nitric oxide (NO) plays important modulatory roles in cardiovascular and metabolic homeostasis.
  • Our research explores dietary inorganic nitrate and non-heme iron and their conversion to bioactive nitrogen oxides which enhance metabolic and cardiovascular functions.
  • A central part of the project is to use electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) technology to measure nitrogen oxide radical species generated from nitrate and non-heme iron and evaluate their functional effects.
  • In a small clinical trial, we aim to investigate the effect of combined nitrate and non-heme iron supplementation in improving cardiovascular and metabolic health in Type 2 Diabetes (T2D) patients.

Key Responsibilities

•    Design, manage, and conduct the research project.
•    Develop new experimental protocols and techniques, in particular EPR-based.
•    Develop hypotheses and analyze complex data sets.
