The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) conducts research and education in the field of neuroscience from the molecular level to the society level. CNS with its division of Eye and Vision has an extensive and very successful line of research in the field of ophthalmology and optometry. The Division of Eye and Vision has a comprehensive assignment in education and is responsible for the ophthalmology training for medical students, optometry students and several other educations such as ophthalmic nurses and orthoptists.

Your mission

Ophthalmology is a broad research area from biomedical mechanisms in the eye and brain over surgical interventions of eye disease to visual perception. We are looking for an ambitious academic at the assistant senior lecturer level with enthusiasm towards bettering human health through basic and translatable neurobiology, with a specific focus on ocular neurodegeneration (e.g. glaucoma). The successful candidate is expected to work closely with other members in the division, national and international collaborators, contribute significantly to a productive research and teaching environment, teach and supervise students and participate in research education.

Description of the subject area

The subject area for the position is vision science with a focus on ocular neurobiology. Vision science is a broad research area which covers mechanisms of visual perception, mechanisms of visual function / visual neuroscience, and mechanisms of health and disease in the eye. The purpose of this recruitment is to strengthen the neurobiology areas of the field with special focus on ocular neurodegeneration.

Eligibility requirements

Appointment to the position of Assistant Senior Lecturer requires demonstrated pedagogical expertise as well as having a PhD or the equivalent scientific competence, or some other professional skills of significance to the nature of the appointment and the tasks and duties it entails.

Appointment to the position of Assistant Senior Lecturer requires good scientific skills and excellent pedagogical skills (see the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

To be eligible you must have a PhD. You must also have practical experience of training others in techniques including practical animal husbandry, molecular biology, inflammation/immunology, neurobiology techniques including –omics data generation and analysis of data, microscopy, ocular surgery, and retinal electrophysiology. You will also be able to provide documentation of translational activities (e.g. collaborations with clinicians or activity in clinical trials).

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

For employment as Assistant Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Experience in basic and translational neurobiological research with a special focus on ocular neurodegeneration (e.g. glaucoma).
  • Experience of drug studies in ocular medicine.
