Vascular surgical research and education at Karolinska University Hospital encompass all arterial and venous vascular diseases. This field addresses one of the major public health diseases, which, alongside myocardial infarction and stroke, represents one of the leading causes of disability and death both globally and nationally. Multidisciplinary collaborations primarily take place with thoracic surgery, cardiology, angiology, and stroke medicine research.
The vascular surgery unit at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK) at Karolinska Institutet and Karolinska University Hospital has conducted epidemiological, clinical, and translational research for over 30 years in key areas such as carotid stenosis and ischemic stroke, aneurysm disease, aortic dissection, lower extremity arterial disease, treatment studies for lower extremity and aortic disease, venous insufficiency, bleeding/coagulation, trauma research, and vascular surgical nursing research. Similar topics are also included in a broad educational program spanning undergraduate, doctoral, and specialist training levels.
Clinically, the vascular surgery unit at Karolinska University Hospital is the largest vascular surgery center in the country, providing highly specialized open vascular and endovascular treatment for both arterial and venous vascular disease in close collaboration with other related specialties.
The position is based at the Department of Molecular Medicine and Surgery (MMK),
Karolinska Institutet, at 50% full-time, combined with employment as a senior consultant or, at a minimum, a specialist physician at the Vascular Surgery Medical Unit, Karolinska University Hospital, Solna, at 50% full-time.
The professorship includes vascular surgical research, broadly covering arterial and venous vascular diseases, and education. The professor will lead the vascular surgical research group at MMK, where, in addition to conducting their own research, they are expected to lead and develop the group's research in vascular disease, including epidemiological research, patient-centered treatment research, basic and translational science, and nursing research. This role also includes responsibility for education within the subject area from undergraduate to doctoral and post-graduate levels.
To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on education and research the applicant must have demonstrated excellent pedagogical skills and very good scientific skills and clinical skills.

The position will be combined with clinical service as a specialist-trained physician (specialist physician, associate senior consultant, or senior consultant) in vascular surgery at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna. Therefore, applicants must hold a medical degree, specialist competence in vascular surgery (or an equivalent surgical specialty), and meet the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare’s requirements for a Swedish medical license to practice in Sweden.
Since the position includes clinical employment, applicants must, besides English, have knowledge and demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norweigan or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).
It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
The Professorship has a focus on education and research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (3), leadership and collaboration skills (2), and clinical skills (2).
