Liver disease is an expanding field with many unanswered questions and the potential for long-term scientific careers. The Hagström research group at Karolinska Institutet has a long history and focus on clinical and epidemiological studies in the field of liver diseases. Now, we are looking for a highly motivated postdoc who will lead a project on a rare liver disease: alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency (AATD). Opportunities to work on other disease areas is also possible, pending the profile of the applicant. Within our research group you will find an opportunity to use unique and already existing data sets to improve our understanding of liver diseases and contribute to world-leading research.

You will use detailed data from a wide range of sources on liver disease in Sweden. The goal of this postdoc position is to contribute to better health by improved identification of patients with AATD at risk for severe liver outcomes

Your mission

Your main role will be to perform a broad range of analyses of registry- and clinical data on some of the largest cohorts in the field. Tasks include research development with a particular focus on the rate of liver outcomes and how to best predict this in AATD. You will have the opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary as well as an international setting. At our department, you will have vast opportunities to engage and participate in various research forums, outside as well as inside the department. There will also be an opportunity to engage in teaching for the interested candidate. We are located at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, which is an inclusive workplace, encouraging collaborative departmental and interdisciplinary research. This is a position of three years with possibility of extension.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

The successful candidate has a PhD in fields such as epidemiology or biostatistics, alternatively a strong profile in such fields. We will also consider candidates with a clinical PhD within hepatology or related disease areas with a clear focus on epidemiological projects. Previous experience of Swedish data is a merit, as is competence regarding AATD or liver diseases. We value a drive to independently initiate and conduct studies. Fluency in English (both spoken and written) is required, while knowledge of Swedish is considered a merit. You are highly proficient in using statistical software such as R, SAS, or STATA. Further, we expect you to have excellent skills in writing scientific papers. Personal qualities that are considered desirable include:
