Do you want to contribute to improving the treatment of vascular diseases?

We are looking for a new colleague who is a team player with strong collaboration and communication skills, experienced in handling and processing large datasets, and eager to contribute to new knowledge for better vascular disease treatment.

Description of the subject area

The intended senior research infrastructure specialist will be integrated into the vascular surgery research group at MMK, Karolinska Institutet. The vascular surgery group, led by Professor Ulf Hedin, MD, PhD, conducts translational and clinical research on vascular diseases. The group operates in BioClinicum, Karolinska University Hospital, Solna, and consists of approximately 20 members, including several research group leaders, researchers, clinicians, doctoral students, and technical staff.

The vascular diseases we study include stroke caused by atherosclerosis in the carotid artery, aortic aneurysm, aortic dissections, and peripheral arterial disease, all of which contribute to cardiovascular mortality. To better understand the development of these vascular diseases, we analyse cellular and molecular signalling pathways in complex vascular tissues collected in several large biobanks from both patients and animal models. This platform enables large-scale analyses at multiple levels of molecular processes in vascular tissue and blood, combined with genetic and clinical parameters, as well as follow-up studies in animal and cell models of vascular diseases.

Your mission

As a member of the group, your main task will be to lead the design, development, and maintenance of our research data infrastructure and to support colleagues in advanced scientific analyses based on our databases. The role involves centralising large-scale research data, ensuring accessibility and security in data storage and management, and helping researchers utilise advanced computational tools for data-driven, exploratory research.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a senior research infrastructure specialist, the applicant must have demonstrated scientific expertise and hold a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a Swedish doctorate. The applicant should also have demonstrated technical and methodological proficiency, with a high degree of technical and methodological independence where their own contributions have been significant. Applicants should have documented broad and deep competence in several techniques/methods with a focus on both service and development.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Documented ability to develop and maintain internal analysis platforms, including interactive dashboards or web applications.
  • Knowledge of advanced analysis methods (e.g., machine learning, multi-omics pipelines, high-performance computing) and how they can be implemented in user-friendly workflows.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with a user-centred approach, including experience in training and supporting colleagues with varying skill levels, and an ambition to develop infrastructure and tools that are accessible, intuitive, and valuable for researchers.
  • Experience in interdisciplinary collaboration in diverse teams, such as clinical researchers, biologists, and data scientists, with the ability to translate and explain technical concepts to different audiences.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • A doctoral degree (or equivalent) in a relevant field (e.g., Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or Computer Science).
  • Experience in software development methodology, such as coding best practices, version control (e.g., Git), and container technologies (e.g., Docker, Singularity).
  • Experience in translational research and an interest in linking basic research to clinical or applied contexts to maximise the relevance and impact of research.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
