Research Assistant in Computational non-coding RNA Biology

The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC have about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

Vicente Pelechano’s laboratory is located at the Science for Life Laboratory (SciLifeLab, http://www.scilifelab.se/) in the Karolinska Institute campus. SciLifeLab is equiped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and core facilities, and is home to one of the largest sequencing cluster in Europe.

Our group combines experimental and computational work and aims to develop and apply novel genome-wide techniques to address fundamental biological questions with medical implications. We are especially interested in how subtle variations in gene expression can lead to differential cellular phenotypes and are passionate about RNA biology (http://pelechanolab.com/). You will have the opportunity to work in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment and combine the development of state-of-the art genome-wide approaches with the molecular dissection of fundamental biological problems.

Your mission

The available Research Assistant position focuses on applying computational analysis of multi-omics data to gain new insights into the roles of non-coding RNAs in regulating cell heterogeneity. This role involves developing and applying novel genomic approaches to study eukaryotic gene expression at using computational approaches. The recruited candidate will contribute to improving our understanding of the functional consequences of variations in the expression of regulatory RNA molecules. The candidate will perform original research in computational biology and acquire the required computational skills necessary for the completion of the project.

The candidate is expected to communicate the scientific results by writing up scientific papers and attending scientific meetings. The ideal candidate will participate in the general duties of the team and effectively communicate with scientists of very diverse backgrounds in a highly interdisciplinary and international environment. Working language is English.

Your profile

Applicants to this position should have a master’s degree in Molecular Biology, Bioinformatics or similar field.

In addition to the above requirements for the position:

Novel and creative thinking abilities
Experience interpreting biological data and critically analysing results
Good interpersonal skills and ability to work in teams
Excellent programming and scripting skills, preferably in Python and R statistics
Previous experience with next-generation sequencing data analysis
Excellent understanding of molecular biology and genetics

Meritorious for the position:

Scientific track record in non-coding RNA biology
Previous experience on single-cell analysis
Demonstrated initiative, and independence
In the appointment, special weight will be attached to scientific skill of relevance to the project and to previous research experience
