We are hiring a postdoctoral fellow who will join the team of Associate Professor Shireen Sindi, who works within the Nordic Brain Network (NBN), which is part of the division of Clinical Geriatrics, Center for Alzheimer Research, NVS. The largest part of this multidisciplinary research team is located at KI (Q-building in Solna), and team members are also present at the Karolinska University Hospital, in Finland and the UK. Broadly, the NBN carries out research focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. The research team has carried out prevention randomized controlled trials (RCT) and is involved in several international collaborations and networks (https://ki.se/en/nvs/nordicbrain-network).
Within this network, Dr. Sindi conducts research on stress and sleep disturbances, which have recently been identified as important potential risk factor for dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. As a next step in this novel line of research, the goal is to investigates the multi-system biological mechanisms underlying stress and sleep disturbances. These include neuroimaging correlates, Alzheimer’s disease biomarkers measures in cerebrospinal fluid (beta amyloid, tau), cortisol, among other markers. This research will also aid in identifying individuals at risk for dementia, and inform future multidomain preventive lifestyle interventions.

To conduct the research, the applicant will work with several research studies, which will be selected based on the specific research questions. These include population-based cohort studies, clinic-based cohorts studies and RCTs. The applicant will also support students in the team, and contribute to various collaborative projects. The applicant will also attend virtual meeting to collaborate with team members located in different sites in Sweden, Finland and in the UK.
This is a full-time (100%) position for 2 years
To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor, a PhD or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish PhD is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. Completion of your doctoral degree within the last three years is considered an advantage. If there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
We are seeking a researcher with a PhD in Epidemiology, medical sciences or related field, with solid statistical knowledge and capacities to independently perform statistical analyses. Priority will be given to candidates with experiences working with older populations, cognitive impairment/dementia, stress and/or sleep, and biomarkers data including neuroimaging, fluid biomarkers, among others.
Being fluent in spoken and written English is required. Having an understanding of Swedish language is also a merit, considering that we work with clinical data in Swedish, and the need to apply for ethical applications, which are also in Swedish. The successful candidate should show a high level of responsibility, independence and problem-solving skills, and be an active team player in our large and dynamic multidisciplinary group. Great importance is attributed to collaboration abilities and communications skills, as a substantial part of the work involves collaboration with others. The workload may be variable, and some periods may consist of higher workload. The position will require flexibility regarding working hours to meet deadlines. The candidate should also have good project management skills to efficiently structure the work according to planned timelines.
