The Institute for Environmental Medicine (IMM) conducts research in toxicology, epidemiology, environmental and occupational medicine and physiology with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect human health. IMM educates students, doctoral students and professionals in toxicology, work and health, epidemiology, registry-based research, global and equal care and health, biostatistics, and health promotion. IMM is responsible for the master's programme in toxicology and the master's programme in work and health at Karolinska Institutet. IMM is a national expert body in environmental medicine. Researchers at IMM are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers and participate in national and international expert groups.

Description of the subject area

Toxicology is a subject area that investigates the mechanisms and toxic effects of chemical substances with the aim of identifying risks to humans and contributing to sustainable development. Genetic toxicology is a subject area that specifically deals with the effects and mechanisms of how toxic substances and complex mixtures of e.g. environmental pollution causes DNA damage and mutations. Knowledge in genetic toxicology is applied in cancer risk assessment.

Your mission

You will independently conduct and lead research in genetic toxicology with focus on complex mixtures of e.g. environmental pollution as well as supervise doctoral students and postdocs. The duties also include to teach within the master's programme in toxicology, especially on mechanisms and methodology for studies and risk assessment related to genetic toxicology and cancer. You will participate in IMM's mission as a national expert body in environmental medicine according to Ordinance (1994:1244) on the Institute for Environmental Medicine and participate specifically in genetic toxicology and cancer.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer with focus on research, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated very good pedagogical skills; excellent scientific skills. (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).

It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.

Assessment criteria

The Senior Lectureship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (2), leadership and collaboration skills (2).

For employment as Senior Lecturer at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated

  • Experience of research in genetic toxicology
  • Experience in developing new models for improved cancer risk assessment of e.g. environmental pollutants
  • Experience of acting as a scientific advisor relevant to IMM's mission as a national expert body in environmental medicine
  • Experience in teaching toxicology
