Description of the subject area

The principal researcher will lead a research group at Division of Neurogeriatrics and drive a research line on preclinical models of aging and neurodegenerative diseases, including Alzheimer’s disease.

Your mission

The Principal Researcher will lead and develop studies focused on understanding the underlying mechanisms of age-related neurodegenerative diseases, with a particular emphasis on Alzheimer’s disease. The candidate will utilize advanced in vitro and animal models to investigate key risk factors such as cholesterol metabolism and its impact on disease pathology. A significant aspect of this role includes exploring sex-specific differences and age-related variations, as well as evaluating the efficacy of existing pharmacological interventions targeting these risk factors. The researcher will play a central role in advancing knowledge, driving insights into disease progression, and informing the development of gender-tailored therapeutic strategies.

The principal researcher will teach and mentor Ph.D. students and postdoctoral researchers and foster collaborations within and beyond Karolinska Institutet. This includes securing competitive research funding, disseminating findings through high-impact publications, and participating in national and international conferences.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having a foreign degree deemed equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding as the main applicant and have the potential to obtain further external funding. The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.

Excellent ability to speak and write in English is a requirement.                                           

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

• a well-established, independent, and coherent line of investigation focusing on sex differences, cholesterol metabolism, and pharmacological interventions in both animal models and human samples. This should be complemented by an excellent track record, including senior authorship and experience supervising PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. Additionally, the applicant should have successfully secured research grants as the main applicant in regional, national, and international competition.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

• excellent communication capabilities and scientific collaborations and vast experience in leading a research group with personnel and economic responsibility.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
