Liver disease is an expanding and attractive field with many unanswered questions and the potential for long-term scientific careers. The Hagström research group at Karolinska Institutet has a long history and focus on clinical and epidemiological studies in the field of liver diseases, especially within metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) which currently have a global prevalence of 38%. Within our research group you will find an opportunity to use unique data sets to improve our understanding of liver diseases and contribute to world-leading research.

We offer an engaging interdisciplinary research environment where you may contribute to high quality research on an internationally competitive level. There is a strong interaction with other epidemiologists, clinicians, and other research labs, locally and internationally. You will use detailed data from a wide range of sources on liver disease development in Sweden, as well as highly characterized cohorts with genetic and histological information. The goal of this position is to contribute to better health by improved identification of patients at risk for both severe liver and cardiovascular outcomes, and the interplay between these conditions.

Your mission

Your main role will be to perform a broad range of analyses of registry- and clinical data on some of the largest cohorts in the field. Tasks include research development with a particular focus on the interaction and risk prediction for cardiovascular diseases in patients with chronic liver disease, and vice versa. You will have the opportunity to work within an interdisciplinary as well as an international setting. At our department, you will have vast opportunities to engage and participate in various research forums, outside as well as inside the department. There will also be an opportunity to engage in teaching for the interested candidate. We are located at the Department of Medicine, Huddinge, which is an inclusive workplace, encouraging collaborative departmental and interdisciplinary research. 

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation

You have a PhD in fields such as epidemiology or biostatistics, alternatively a strong profile in such fields. We will also consider candidates with a clinical PhD within hepatology or cardiovascular disease with a clear focus on epidemiological projects. Previous experience of Swedish data is a merit, as is competence regarding cardiovascular or liver diseases, and working with radiological data sources. We value a drive to independently initiate and conduct studies. Fluency in English (both spoken and written) is required, while knowledge of Swedish is considered a merit. You are highly proficient in using statistical software such as R, SAS, or STATA. Personal qualities that are considered desirable:

  • A good team player with interpersonal skills and a considerate manner.
  • Willing to learn and collaborate with persons outside your own field.
