Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Join us at Karolinska Institutet / Biomedicum and decipher how recent human evolution has shaped gene regulatory circuits and impact physiology and human health - with world-class facilities, passionate biomedical scientists, a buzzing capital, and scenic nature at your doorstep.

Division

In the research group led by Bjørt K. Kragesteen, we are particularly interested in using the lens of human evolution to link DNA variation to phenotypes to uncover gene regulatory processes and mechanisms that govern systems oxygen homeostasis. We are seeking a curious and motivated computational postdoctoral researcher to join our team that enjoys working closely with experimental biologists and is eager to learn and share complementary skills and expertise that will boost their career as well as our interdisciplinary research to make fundamental discoveries.

As an interdisciplinary lab we are intertwining population genetic studies with state-of-the-art functional genomic tools. We apply single cell and spatial omics methods to in vivo animal models, and in vitro human 3D organotypic and organoid models to understand the fundamental function of multicellular tissues central to systems oxygen homeostasis, with the aim to better understand present day health disparities and intervention of medical hypoxia related conditions.

Duties

The responsibilities of the postdoctoral researcher will be varied and depending on expertise and project objectives include:

  • Analysis and integration of single cell and spatial multiomics data from human and mouse tissues
  • Integration of genomic selection analysis of available whole genome sequencing population studies, GWAS studies, etc.
  • Further development of analysis to identify functional non-coding variants and changes in transcription factor motifs
  • Possibility of training in relevant experimental laboratory techniques
  • Sharing insights via internal/international presentations and peer-reviewed publications

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctoral researcher, a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.

We welcome applications from candidates with a doctoral degree in Computational Biology, Bioinformatics, or other related fields. The successful candidate is a curious, motivated, responsible scientist with good communication and organizational skills who enjoys working with people and take pride in delivering work of good quality.

The work requires:

  • Expertise in Computational Biology and data analysis using R/Python or similar.
  • Experience with population genetics analysis is a merit.
  • Experience with single cell multiomics analysis is a merit.
  • Proficiency in English and excellent communication skills.

The applicant must be able to integrate well into the international and multidisciplinary environment. Personal suitability is therefore of great importance.

Entry requirements

Scholarships for postdoctoral qualification can be established for foreign researchers who place their qualifications in Sweden. The purpose of scholarships for postdoctoral qualification is to promote internationalization and contribute to research qualification after a doctorate or equivalent.
A scholarship for carrying out postdoctoral research can be granted for a maximum of two years within a four year period following the receipt of a doctoral degree or equivalent.
To be eligible for a postdoctoral scholarship, the person must have obtained a doctorate or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctorate. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) start date of the post doctoral education.

The head of the department determines whether their previous training and scholarly qualifications correspond to a Swedish doctorate or higher.

Location: Solna

Type of scholarship

The amount is tax free and it is set for twelve months at a time, paid out on a six months basis. In exceptional cases, shorter periods may be acceptable.

Application process

An employment application must contain the following documents in English:

  • A complete curriculum vitae, including date of the thesis defense, title of the thesis, previous academic positions, academic title, current position, academic distinctions, and committee work
  • A complete list of publications
  • A summary of current work (no more than one page)
  • A short motivation letter (in English and no more than one page)

Welcome to apply at the latest January 21st, 2025.

The application is to be submitted through the Varbi recruitment system (i.e., not by email).
