Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven divisions within which both research and teaching are conducted. The department is involved in advanced research in both basic and applied research. The Systems Virology lab at Laboratory Medicine focuses on using systems biology and experimental approaches to understand the biology of host-pathogen interactions targeted towards the RNA viruses. The group aims to identify the components of the immune response that are required for natural immune protection and disease severity that can be translated into the future development of vaccine and antiviral strategies against emerging and re-emerging viruses.

The group is now looking for a research specialist for a permanent employment (full time).

Description of the subject area

Our group investigates the underlying immunopathogenic mechanisms in human inflammatory diseases, with particular interest in understanding the cell’s immuno-metabolic reprogramming during infections. The successful applicant shall promote research to elucidate the role of the innate immune system in the pathology of various diseases, such as in severe dengue infection, aiming at providing tools for the design of more efficient diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Your mission

We are looking for an ambitious researcher with enthusiasm for improving human health. The project includes optimization and implementation of advanced single-cell biology techniques (e.g. flow cytometry, single-cell RNA sequencing, ATAC sequencing) and spatial omics, including validation of findings with functional assays. The successful candidate is expected to work closely with other members of the group and with national and international collaborators and contribute significantly to a productive research environment. In addition, the candidate will supervise students and participate in research education. The major focus of the position will be on the viral infections HIV-1 and flaviviruses.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience for at least 4 years after defending their doctoral dissertation. In addition, the successful applicant should have a strong background in molecular biology and translational immunology.

Assessment criteria

It is required that the applicant has

  • Profound experience with multicolor flow cytometry, including high-dimensional analysis of the generated data
  • Experience in cell sorting
  • Experience with single-cell RNA sequencing techniques
  • Expertise in bioinformatics and data analysis
  • Excellent skills in written and spoken English

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has

  • Experience in studying human immune responses to viral infections
  • Experience in research of predictive biomarkers in human pathologies
  • Experience in grant application writing and acquisition of research funding in competition
  • Proven ability to lead multidisciplinary projects
  • Supervised master or PhD students either as main or co-supervisor
  • Experience in teaching and organization of pedagogical activities

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
