The Department of Global Public Health is a multidisciplinary department with the aim to advance knowledge about challenges and opportunities for public health in a local, national, and global setting. Research at the department is focused on how different societal and individual factors affect population health, and to develop and evaluate structural and individual-oriented interventions. Many researchers at the department are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers at regional, national, and international levels. The department has 12 research groups, about 110 PhD students and about 140 employees. 

The position is based in the research group Global Disaster Medicine - Health Needs and Response, that conducts research, runs educational programs and courses within the field, provides policy support to public agencies and seconds experts to operational agencies in disasters.  The research group is a WHO Collaborative Centre in global disaster medicine.  

Your mission

As an Assistant Professor you are expected to serve as a key senior level member in the group. You are expected to engage and develop the group and stimulate research and collaborate with members of the team within the duties below 

The position as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Senior lecturer (lektor) is the second highest position, below professor in the Swedish academic career structure and is equivalent to associate professor in the North American system. The purpose of the employment as Assistant Professor is to develop research as an independent researcher and acquire the scientific qualifications required for eligibility for appointment as Senior Lecturer. 

Description of duties and areas of responsibility:

  • Develop and conduct research within the area of health system in disasters and health crises relevant to the scope of the research group. Publish articles and reports and seek research funding 
  • Participate and support in research group projects and assignments 
  • Teach at the programs and courses and act as course leader and examinator
  • Supervise student thesis and PhD students
  • Be a senior level person in the research group and support its development 

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 6 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Applicant must have: 

  • A degree in a health related field (master level or equivalent)
  • A PhD in a field related to health system in disasters and health crises
  • An established international network of research partners in the area
  • Conducted research of high quality in the last years, as well as documented experience of conducting research and data collection in resource-scare contexts on health systems in disasters and health crises
  • Documented experience of both qualitative and quantitative research methods and demonstrated ability to apply them in resource scarce settings
  • During recent years published in internationally leading journals in his/her field and had a prominent place in the list of authors, preferably as first author and/or last author
  • Demonstrated experience from teaching and course leadership within the field of global disaster medicine 
  • Demonstrated the potential to obtain external financing and to further build an international network within their area of research
  • Show a strong potential to achieve the requirements for promotion to senior lecturer within the designated time
  • Have excellent written and oral communication skills in English  

Applicants should be able to work independently but also have a strong aptitude for cooperation and teamwork. Personal qualities will be considered when appointing.  

Bases of assessment

Scientific expertise within health systems research in disasters and health crises will be most important when assessing applicants. The level of experience in conducting research in resource-scares contexts and degree of expertise in applicable qualitative and quantitative methods will also be important in the assessment of applicants. Pedagogical experience and course leadership skills are meritorious. Personal qualities including ability to function as part of a team will also form a base in the assessment of candidates

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
