The Institute of Environmental Medicine (IMM) is a department at Karolinska Institutet and an interdisciplinary research institution within the broad field of environmental medicine. IMM conducts cutting edge research within the areas of epidemiology, environmental and occupational medicine, toxicology, physiology, and biostatistics with the aim to clarify how environmental and lifestyle factors affect our health and which role genes have. IMM also serves as a scientific advisor to public authorities within the area of environmental medicine and IMM scientists participate in national and international expert groups.

The research group

The epidemiological research at IMM aims to enhance understanding of disease aetiology and prognosis, emphasising environmental and lifestyle factors, alongside methodological development, and stringency. The unit of Environmental Epidemiology has an established track record of conducting successful large-scale studies, both nationally and internationally, that examine the health effects of ambient air pollution, community noise, green structure, and other environmental exposures. In a multidisciplinary setting, we collaborate with prominent research groups globally, employing advanced study designs to generate robust research data and inform public health policy. Collaborating with us provides access to a robust research network, high-quality cohorts with comprehensive environmental and health data, and the opportunity to engage with a team possessing strong epidemiological and biostatistical expertise. Additionally, we regularly engage in environmental health risk assessments for both national and international organisations and authorities. These assessments are often based on research conducted within the unit.

Your mission

The postdoctoral researcher will participate in a research project examining the impact of elevated indoor temperatures on health and identifying the characteristics of homes that influence their susceptibility to overheating. The project involves the collection of research data on indoor temperature and health indicators from voluntary participants in major cities throughout Sweden over two summers. The project will employ sophisticated quantitative epidemiological techniques to investigate the relationships between public health and exposure to diverse environmental factors, such as in- and outdoor temperature, urban greenness, air pollution, and traffic noise. The project aims to assess disparities in exposure and vulnerability to environmental hazards within the population. The postdoctoral researcher will participate in the planning and implementation of research studies, including data collection and management, statistical analysis, and manuscript preparation in conjunction with other researchers. The postdoctoral researcher may engage in a restricted degree of teaching, supervise students, and contribute to the dissemination of research findings.

Your profile

To be eligible for employment as a postdoctor a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier. Eligibility for this position includes a PhD degree within medicine, epidemiology, biostatistics, public health, or related field.

The successful applicant has/is:

• Solid knowledge of epidemiological methods and experience of epidemiological research, preferably within the field of environmental factors and health.

• Experience with statistical analyses of cross-sectional and longitudinal health outcome data.

• High level of proficiency in handling large datasets, preferably also experience of register linkages.

• Excellent data management skills and a solid knowledge of statistical software (preferably STATA or R).

• Excellent command of written and spoken English.

• Experience in organizing and carrying out research projects.

• An ability to collaborate with colleagues within and beyond the group.

• Is organized, responsible, efficient, and flexible in dealing with unpredictability and changes.

• Proficiency in Swedish language is a considerable Merit.

Merits also include documented knowledge of environmental epidemiology. We place great emphasis on personal qualities, and the applicant will need to feel comfortable with working in teams and demonstrate good interpersonal skills. The applicant also needs to be independent enough to formulate new hypotheses and critically examine the results.
