The Department of Microbiology, Tumor and Cell Biology (MTC) at Karolinska Institutet conducts research and teaching within immunology, infection biology, cell biology and cancer. MTC have about 40 research groups and our key words are multidisciplinary, bridging, national and international collaborations.

Description of the subject area

The research team of Dr. Sylvain Peuget investigates how the bacterial microbiota participates in cancer initiation and progression. More specifically, we are interested in the molecular mechanisms which link bacterial dysbiosis, inflammation and alterations of the tumor suppressor p53 pathway, and ultimately cancer.

To reach this goal, we use small molecules as research tools and apply systems biology and high throughput assays, such as transcriptome profiling, ChIP-seq, and CRISPR screens. We aim to bridge cancer biology with microbiology by performing multidisciplinary research at MTC, a very advantageous environment including experts in cancer and cell biology, infections biology and immunology.

Your mission

We are seeking a highly motivated and dedicated research specialist to carry out an exciting project aiming to elucidate the mechanisms of interplay between bacteria-driven inflammation, innate immune response and p53 tumor suppression both in vitro and in a novel mouse model. You will lead a collaborative and multidisciplinary research program involving immunology, cancer biology, cell biology and microbiology.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

In addition to the aforementioned requirements:

• To qualify, the applicant must hold a PhD in an appropriate scientific field, with at least 4 years of relevant and productive work experience.
• Solid documented experience with mouse models, including maintenance of a mouse colony and procedures related to bacterial colonization are required.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown:

• Experience with mammalian cell culture, including primary cell isolation, with bacterial culture and infections as well as flow cytometry, immunocytochemistry and histochemistry, ELISA, basic molecular techniques (SDS-PAGE, Western blot, qPCR).
• Solid experience and excellent track record in the microbiology field.
• Previous experience in cancer biology within the p53 field.

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown:

• Experience with high throughput assays (RNAseq, ChIP-seq) and data analysis.
• Previous experience with AOM-DSS model.
• Applications will be particularly welcome from candidates who utilize creative experimental approaches at the interface between cancer biology, microbiology and immunology.
