Karolinska Institutet,

- with focus on research

Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Would you like to work with experimental oncological research with focus on precision medicine at Karolinska Institutet? Are you interested in preclinical and translational research in the field of human tumors? Do you want to contribute to precision medicine with improved cancer diagnostics and treatment options for cancer patients based on your research? Welcome to an exciting research environment where pre-clinical and clinically active researchers meet.

The main objectives of the Department of Oncology-Pathology are basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to tumor diseases. The department´s experimental activities are carried out in Bioclinicum at the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, and at the nearby located SciLife Lab, in close connection to the clinical activities and education on different levels.

Description of the subject area

Experimental oncology, especially within precision medicine, is an important part of the strategic plan for the future development of research at the Department of Oncology-Pathology. The intention is that the department's research in this area will contribute to and enable precision medicine in the tumor field, that is how to optimize diagnostics and treatment based on a single individual's specific disease and achieve both better diagnostics and treatment effects as well as limit side effects.

The subject refers to experimental research that is based on clinically inspired questions for cancer patients and which aims to provide patient benefit. The research questions may, for example, include basic molecular studies of tumor transformation regarding heterogeneity; cellular origin, stage of development and relationship to surrounding tissue; acquired and constitutional changes to DNA, RNA and protein expression; and understanding of treatment resistance. Development of new biomarkers as well as strategies for the treatment of tumors and medical side effects from the treatment are other important directions.

Your mission

You will primarily conduct high quality experimental oncology research and are expected to provide academic leadership within the field. You shall contribute to the department's daily activities and joint commitments. You shall be a "principal investigator" as well as a research leader of, for example a research group or a team within a research group.  You should supervise doctoral students and postdocs, as well as develop the field, preferably in collaborations with other colleagues locally, nationally and internationally. The position includes participating in undergraduate and postgraduate education at the department. You are also expected to be engaged in the implementation of your research findings in clinical studies or their application in clinical practice.

For employment as Professor at Karolinska Institutet, the eligibility requirements and assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure are applied in relation to established profile of employment.

It is particularly meritorious that you have demonstrated:

  • Research ranging from in vivo and in vitro models to human tissues and patient samples
  • Research using high-tech platforms for analyzes of heterogeneity in tumors and other relevant tissues
  • Research where the results have clinical implications.

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
