The Department of Clinical Neuroscience (CNS) is one of the largest departments at Karolinska Institutet (KI). At one of the department’s six sections, Centre for Psychiatry Research (CPF), they run interdisciplinary and multiprofessional research, undergraduate education, postgraduate education and continuing education related to mental illness. Examples of current research are studies associated with various diagnostic categories (eg schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and addiction), brain imaging as well as clinical treatment research in collaboration with Region Stockholm.

Your mission

As an assistant lecturer you will have extensive educational responsibility in general psychiatry psychiatry within undergraduate education, especially in the medical program and to some extent in the physiotherapist program. The psychiatry teaching at the medical program at KI is given in the course “Clinical medicine – focus on neuro, senses, psyche (NSP)”. Psychiatry teaching is given four times a year with approximately 25-30 students each time, and you will be responsible for managing it at one of three psychiatry units, site Solna, in collaboration with the administrator, amanuens and other teaching doctors within KI and SLSO Psychiatry.

You are expected to drive educational development within the psychiatry moment as well as within the NSP course and the medical program. The work includes planning, management and teaching at the specified courses as well as collaboration within the medical program. An important part of the role is to participate in and develop psychiatric teaching. A new six-year medical program is also being implemented where CNS wants to have a prominent role and where psychiatry education will be expanded. You are also expected to conduct active research in psychiatry at an international level and to supervise doctoral students.

The employment as Assistant Professor is time limited for 4 years with the right to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Eligibility requirements

We are looking for you who hold a Swedish medical license with specialist competence in psychiatry. You must have active research in clinical psychiatry or translational research with a clinical connection. In addition, it also applies that you must have completed 10 weeks of higher education pedagogic training (or have equivalent competence) according to SUHF’s recommendations for credentialing higher education pedagogic training.

In addition to English, the applicant must possess knowledge and skills in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (GERS)).

Those eligible for employment as an Assistant Professor are individuals who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence. Preference should be given to those who were awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence no more than five years prior to the expiry of the application period for the position as assistant professor.

Those who have been awarded a PhD or attained equivalent research competence earlier may however be considered if special grounds exist. 

Special grounds refer to:

  • parental leave,
  • positions of trust in trade union organizations
  • mandatory service in the total defense forces
  • long-term illness

Ground, dates and extent must be clearly specified in the application and verified with relevant documentation.

Bases of assessment

Pedagogical and scientific expertise will be most important when assessing applicants.

It is particularly meritorious if the applicant has demonstrated:

  • Experience in various teaching methods at both undergraduate and advanced levels, pedagogical development work, and taking responsibility for courses and course components.
  • Experience in individual supervision of theses at undergraduate and advanced levels, as well as for doctoral candidates.
  • Scientific original work and its quality and quantity, with particular consideration given to post-doctoral research.
  • Independent research grants obtained through competitive processes where the applicant is the principal investigator.

It is also meritorious if the applicant has demonstrated:

  • Pedagogical development work resulting in improved education.
  • Presentations and scientific papers at national and international conferences.
  • Development of an independent research profile within their field and multiple first and/or last author publications demonstrating drive within their subject area.

Particular assessment for promotion to Senior Lecturer

An Assistant Professor employed in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance Chapter 4 Section 12a shall be promoted to Senior Lecturer if he or she is eligible for an employment as Senior Lecturer in accordance with the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet and is assessed to be suitable for such employment in accordance with the assessment criteria that KI has decided should be applied when being promoted to Senior Lecturer. The assessment criteria stated in the Instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet that was valid at the time of appointment as Assistant Professor will be applied when applying for promotion to Senior Lecturer. Current assessment criteria is found here. Such promotion results in a permanent position as Senior Lecturer.
