Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

Recognition and fusion of the female and male gametes, egg and sperm, marks the beginning of the life of a new individual. Join the research group of Professor Luca Jovine (http://jovinelab.org) and combine cell, structural and computational biology to shed light on a biological event that is not only fundamental from a basic science point of view but has also major implications for the future of human reproductive medicine!

Your mission

We have recently computationally identified a number of protein complexes that are likely to play a key role in gamete fusion (see for example PubMed ID 38666763), and your mission will be to both extend these studies computationally and obtain experimental evidence for some of the suggested biomolecular interactions.

Your profile

Given the dual nature of the project, you should have a Master’s degree and:

(1) Be proficient in computational structural biology, particularly in relation with deep learning-based protein structure prediction by AlphaFold and related software. Working knowledge of the Linux operating system is absolutely essential; experience with molecular graphics programs (PyMOL, Chimera/ChimeraX) and knowledge of Python programming are highly desirable.

(2) Have previous experience of recombinant protein expression and/or mammalian/insect cell culture. Previous knowledge of protein purification is also desirable, but not essential; willingness to learn experimental structural biology — if required by the project — is fundamental.

In addition, you should be generally fluent in English (both written and oral) and have a strong personal drive to excel in science. Emphasis will be put on personal suitability.
