Research Specialist in Molecular Breast Cancer Epidemiology

The Department of Medical Epidemiology and Biostatistics conducts research in epidemiology and biostatistics across a broad range of areas within biomedical science. The department is among the largest of its type in Europe and has especially strong research profiles in psychiatric, cancer, reproductive, pediatric, pharmaco, genetic, and geriatric epidemiology, eating disorders, precision medicine, and biostatistics.

Part of the success of our department is due to our collaborative spirit where one factor is that researchers at the Department share and co-finance common resources (e.g., IT and an applied biostatistics group). Description of the subject area

The position is available within the breast cancer research group that currently comprises 3 senior and 4 junior researchers as well as 4 PhD students. The research is performed in an interdisciplinary setting with strong collaboration with clinical departments and other national and international research groups. Our research aims at acquiring a comprehensive picture of breast cancer risk and prognosis using epidemiological studies combined with molecular data and Swedish population-based registries. One of our objectives is to reduce the mortality of breast cancer by improving mammography screening programs. We will continue our previous work on breast cancer screening by exploring false negative and false positive outcomes of screening. Other projects we are working on are studies on blood-bound molecular markers of breast cancer using multi-omics approaches, genomics of aggressive breast cancer and the mammographic density and texture associated with breast cancer subtype. Within the framework of KARMA, https://karmastudy.org/, one of the world’s best-characterized cohorts, several large studies are available with collected biological samples, questionnaires and complete information about clinical characteristics and disease progression.

Your mission

As research specialist you will be responsible for conducting research studies in the areas of molecular and genetic epidemiology of breast cancer. This includes data processing, data analysis and writing scientific text. You will contribute to starting new studies, generating new data and developing new methods. You will also be involved in supervising students, applying for grants, project management and coordinating national and international collaborations.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for employment as a Research Specialist, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise as well as have documented research experience after defending their doctoral dissertation.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

• Experience in writing research applications and ability to independently secure grants.
• Experience in study design and large-scale data management of studies with multiple data modalities including genetic data, epigenetic data, molecular data, Swedish patient registry data, tumor characteristics data, and drug data.
• Previous experience of several research projects and publications in breast cancer epidemiology and molecular biology.
• Previous experience in developing and applying genetic pipelines, such as GWAS, PRS, CNVs, PTVs, Methylation Risk Score, and fine-mapping.
• Comprehensive knowledge of epidemiological methods (such as cohort, cross-sectional), breast cancer, omics and epigenetics.
• Documented experience with statistical programming tools such as R, Python, and Linux in a HPC environment.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are required
