The main objectives of the Department of Oncology-Pathology are basic, translational and clinical research and educational activities related to cancer. The department´s activities are for example carried out in Bioclinicum in close connection to the tumor pathology diagnostics and training within the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna.
Description of the subject area
Tumor pathology regarding modern diagnostics of solid tumors is a broad and dynamic area of research and clinical activity with precision medicine as its goal. Tumor pathological diagnostics may include macroscopic and microscopic changes, abnormal morphology, as well as molecular, genetic, biochemical and physiological changes. The subject covers the full spectrum of changes that initiate and contribute to tumor development and which are crucial for diagnostics prior to tailoring of treatment planning, therapy selection and follow-up based on the patients unique conditions. The subject area includes preclinical, translational as well as clinical studies in human. The studies may refer to for example molecular subgroups within and between patients of tissues as well as body fluids. The development of the field goes hand in hand with the technical development in digital pathology as well as in global analyzes of tissues, individual cells, and cytology preparations.
We are looking for an academic leader within tumor pathology who conducts high quality research within the area. You shall be a “principal investigator” as well as a research leader of for example a research group or a team within a research group. You shall supervise PhD students and younger researchers and develop the area through collaborations with colleagues locally, nationally and internationally. The position includes to teach within basic education for example within the medical program, and to contribute to specialist education and PhD-education in tumor pathology. You shall also actively participate in and lead the development of tumor pathology diagnostics, as well as contribute to spreading new knowledge within the healthcare and the society.
The position is placed at the Department of Oncology-Pathology at Karolinska Institutet with 51 percent of full-time, together with 49 percent of full-time employment at Medical Unit Clinical Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics, site Solna at the Karolinska University Hospital in Solna.
For the clinical appointment, you are expected to actively participate in and lead the development of tumor diagnostics for at least one of the following concerned areas in clinical pathology subject areas represented at the site Solna (gynecological malignancies, head and neck cancer, endocrine tumors, sarcoma, urological cancer, lung cancer, skin cancer, or brain tumors).
Eligibility requirements
To be eligible for an employment as Professor with focus on research the applicant must have demonstrated very good pedagogical skills and excellent scientific skills and clinical skills (See the instructions regarding the Appointment Procedure for Teachers at Karolinska Institutet).
It is a requirement that you have completed 10 weeks of courses on teaching in higher education, as indicated in the recommendations of the Association of Swedish Higher Education Institution. If you lack such education at the time of employment, you must undergo such education during the first two years of employment.
The position will be combined with an employment as a specialist physician, assistant chief physician or chief physician in clinical pathology at the Medical Unit Clinical Pathology and Cancer Diagnostics, at Karolinska University Hospital in Solna, and therefore you must have a Swedish MD with specialist competence in clinical pathology, as well as fulfill the National Board of Health and Welfare's requirements for practicing medicine in Sweden.
Since the position includes clinical work, you must, besides English, demonstrate proficiency in Swedish, Norwegian or Danish (C1 level according to the common European reference scale, CERS).
You shall be a leading and internationally recognized researcher with clear potential for future development and you shall show an own line of research within tumor pathology research about solid tumors.
You shall be an active specialist physician in clinical pathology with extensive knowledge of tumor pathology diagnostics. You shall have a clear vision of how you see the development of diagnostics in tumor pathology for your own area of expertise within the next five years. You shall in your clinical practice be well experienced in clinical routine work such as macroscopical and microscopical diagnostics, participation in clinical conferences and supervision of residents as well as junior specialist doctors.

The Professorship has a focus on research. The assessment will weight qualifications as follows: scientific skills (3), pedagogical skills (2), leadership and collaboration skills (1) and clinical skills (2).
