Do you want to contribute to top quality medical research?

The Department of Laboratory Medicine consists of seven departments in which both research and teaching are conducted. The department is involved in advanced research in both basic and applied research. All departments work in close contact with clinics at Karolinska University Hospital. The department's educational activities contribute to most programs and courses within KI's total educational offerings.

The Division of Biomolecular and Cellular Medicine is currently seeking a Research Specialist for a 40% permanent position.

Description of the subject area

The focus of the EL Andaloussi lab is on developing technologies to exploit the medical applications of extracellular vesicles (EVs). This includes engineering EVs for therapeutic drug delivery as well as analyzing EVs in blood plasma to detect disease. EVs represent a unique opportunity for molecular diagnostics as they are released by all cells and carry the contents and express surface proteins of their cell of origin. Our research program involves developing new and innovative technologies to separate and analyze plasma-borne EVs. To achieve this, we are optimizing methods to enrich EVs from small blood volumes and to purify defined populations derived from specific cell types. To analyze the diagnostic information contained in EVs, we focus on multi-parameter methods such as nucleic acid sequencing and proteomics. Thus, our research platform offers a unique opportunity to discover clinically relevant methods for EV-based molecular diagnostics.

Your mission

As a research specialist, you will coordinate the development and clinical implementation of methods for extracellular vesicle purification and analysis of their content. Your tasks will be to assist in the preparation of ethical approvals, address regulatory hurdles, and assist in the optimization and characterization of the methods developed for EV enrichment. Most of the work will be performed with clinical samples obtained through various collaborations with Karolinska University Hospital.

In your role as a research specialist, you will work practically in the laboratory, interpret and write legal documentation, participate in the conception and design of new projects and take on supervisory responsibilities.

Eligibility requirements

Eligible for employment as a research specialist is a person who has demonstrated scientific competence and has completed a doctoral degree or has a foreign degree that is considered equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree and has documented research work after the defense. In addition, you must have demonstrated extensive research experience. We also want you to have academic training in the field of biochemistry and cell biology.

The projects involved will be highly innovative and require up-to-date knowledge in the field as well as an excellent ability to integrate and apply advanced technologies to develop innovative technical approaches.

Assessment criteria

It is particularly meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Experience in test development and optimization
  • Experience in IP generation and protection
  • Strong interpersonal skills, extensive leadership experience and a positive attitude
  • Knowledge of medical device regulation and academia-industry collaboration

It is meritorious that the applicant has shown

  • Experience in coordinating work within multi-center projects
  • Skills in the Linux environment
  • Extensive experience in protein biochemistry and cell biology

After an overall assessment of the expertise and merits of the applicants in relation to the subject area, Karolinska Institutet will determine which of them has the best potential to contribute to a positive development of the activities at KI.
