Postdoctoral Researcher in Nanotoxicology

Engineered nanomaterials hold considerable promise for the diagnosis and/or treatment of human disease. To this end, close attention to biocompatibility issues is needed. The Unit of Molecular Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine has a strong track record in nanosafety research (Nat Nanotechnol. 2018;13(7):537-543) with particular emphasis on the interactions of nanomaterials and other advanced materials with the immune system and the host microbiome (Nat Nanotechnol. 2023;18(1):42-48). We are now recruiting two post docs for in-depth studies of the biocompatibility of nanomaterials envisioned for anti-cancer and anti-microbial therapies, in the frame of European Innovation Council (EIC)-funded projects.

Your mission

We are looking for two highly motivated candidates with a PhD degree in cell or molecular biology, immunology, toxicology, or related subjects. Experience with the following techniques is required: primary cell cultures and transformed cell lines, confocal and light microscopy, flow cytometry, and other standard cell and molecular biology techniques. Furthermore, previous experience of single-cell analysis techniques, e.g., single-cell RNA sequencing and single-cell mass cytometry, is considered an advantage, as is previous experience of working with nanomaterials. Excellent communication skills (both spoken and written English) and the ability and willingness to interact with other members of the team are essential requirements. The post doc researchers will also support the principal investigator with project reporting, and attend projects meetings, in the frame of the EIC-funded projects.

Your profile

Qualified to be employed as a post doc is one who has obtained a doctorate or has equivalent scientific competence in cell biology, molecular biology, immunology, toxicology, or related subjects. Applicants who have not completed a doctorate at the end of the application period may also apply, provided that all requirements for a completed degree are met before the (intended) date of employment (documentation required). Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability and willingness to interact in a respectful manner with other team members and with external collaborators as well as with core facility staff are deemed essential qualities. 

The successful applicants will work at the Unit of Molecular Toxicology at the Institute of Environmental Medicine, Karolinska Institutet. Both post docs will focus on the biological impact of nanomaterials on in vitro model systems including primary human immune cells using an array of advanced cell and molecular biology approaches. Both projects are funded through grants awarded to Prof. Bengt Fadeel and collaborators by the European Commission.

To be eligible for employment as a post doc a doctoral degree or a foreign degree deemed to be equivalent to a Swedish doctoral degree is required. This eligibility requirement must be fulfilled at the latest at the time of the employment decision. It is considered as an advantage if you have completed your doctoral degree within the last three years, if there are special reasons, your degree may have been completed earlier.
