Do you want to contribute to better health for all?

The Department of Global Public Health is a multidisciplinary department with the aim to advance knowledge about challenges and opportunities for public health in a local, national, and global setting. Research at the department is focused on how different societal and individual factors affect population health, and to develop and evaluate structural and individual-oriented interventions. Many researchers at the department are scientific advisors to authorities and other decision makers at regional, national, and international levels. The department has 12 research groups, about 110 PhD students and about 140 employees.

This position is placed within the research group Global Child Health and the Sustainable Development Goals team. Within our research group you will find an exciting opportunity to work with colleagues across multiple disciplines and geographies. We offer an engaging and international research environment where you will contribute to high quality research that’s directly relevant to accelerating progress against the Sustainable Development Goal agenda.

Your mission

We are looking for an enthusiastic candidate to take the role as a Research Assistant on the EU-funded YiPEE Project – a project which aims to improve youth mental health through arts-based interventions within schools in Stockholm, Chennai, Cape Town and Nairobi. Mental health is a public health issue of major concern, and working together with youth in schools provides an opportunity to not only improve their wellbeing now, but to set-up healthy behaviors and practices that can improve their health in the long term. However, evidence to adapt interventions that take a holistic approach, through arts-based interventions, across multiple contexts is lacking. This is the gap that YiPEE aims to fill.

The position is temporary for 12 months with an extent of 100% (full time).

Your role will involve:

  1. Coordinating between schools, research and implementation partners in Stockholm.
  2. Developing qualitative and quantitative data collection tools.
  3. Conducting qualitative interviews and discussions, and ethnographic observations.
  4. Analyzing, interpreting data and writing academic publications. You will be expected to travel to schools across Stockholm regularly, and may have the opportunity to travel to other partner sites.

Your profile

The candidate must have the following essential qualifications:

  1. A master’s degree in a field relevant to global health or mental health (e.g. global health, public health, social science, psychology).
  2. Fluent in written and spoken Swedish.
  3. Very good knowledge of written and spoken English.
  4. Experience of qualitative data collection and analysis (this can include interviews, FGDs, observations).
  5. Able and willing to travel on a weekly basis to schools across Stockholm.

Desirable qualifications includes:

  1. Demonstrated experience in designing, conducting and analysing qualitative data.
  2. Work experience within a multi-country and multi-disciplinary team.
  3. Work experience with youth or in school-based projects.
  4. Knowledge of the mental health research field.

The candidate needs to have excellent skills in collaboration, multi-disciplinary working and cross-cultural communication, and be well organised.

The applicants must have legal right and permission to work in the EU.
