The Nordic Brain Network (NBN, PI: Prof Miia Kivipelto) is part of the section of Clinical Geriatrics, Center for Alzheimer Research, NVS. The NBN is a multidisciplinary research team at KI, but team members are also present at the Karolinska University Hospital, in Finland and UK. NBN research focuses on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease (AD). The NBN conducts cutting edge biomedical, epidemiological, observational and qualitative research, as well as randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for dementia risk reduction and is part of several international collaborations.
Prof. Kivipelto is the PI of the Finnish Geriatric Intervention Study to Prevent Cognitive Impairment and Disability (FINGER) RCT, the first large-scale trial showing that a 2-year multidomain intervention can benefit cognition in older adults at risk of dementia. Prof. Kivipelto and her team work to optimize and scale-up the FINGER model, to identify effective strategies for dementia risk reduction and prevention applicable on a global scale. Towards this end, Prof. Kivipelto founded the EU-FINGERS Consortium, and the World-Wide FINGERS Network.
We are looking for a committed, well-established scientist working in the field of dementia risk reduction, with a special focus on multidomain interventions, to support and grow the NBN activites.
The successful candidate is expected to contribute to leading a research team towards novel discoveries within the subject area, and to disseminate these findings at the international arena in the form of scientific publications and presentations at national and international research conferences and seminars. Other included tasks are research development with a particular focus on new approaches for risk reduction and prevention of dementia in different populations (community and clinical settings). In addition, the candidate is expected to be responsible for management of personnel within the team, do fund raising and promotion of internationalization at university level. He/she should also actively participate in other departmental activities when called upon and contribute to the NBN activities.
To be eligible for employment as a Principal Researcher, in addition to holding a Degree of Doctor, PhD, or having equivalent scientific expertise, the applicant must have demonstrated research expertise. The applicant must also be a Research Leader and have established their own line of research. The applicant should furthermore have shown documented, high-quality scientific production, particularly in the last six years and have the potential to energetically drive their research forward as well as be recognized nationally and internationally. The applicant should also have obtained good, long-term and preferably external funding and have the potential to obtain further external funding. The applicant should have shown teaching and supervision experience and demonstrated good leadership qualities.
